I am experiencing an issue which involves a bad fuel smell which is occurring..especially on the passenger side. With the top in the 1/2 way position, I was able to remove the access panel. This only allowed for access to the fuel pump. However, there is approx. 1 - 1 1/2 TBSPs of fuel sitting on top the the fuel pump (pic attached). I originally thought from previous threads, this was directly related to the "rollover valve" issue, but now am not sure as the fuel leak was/is visible on the fuel pump on one side of the car / RH pump only. Was contemplating tackling this one myself & ordering either the valves or a new pump from Ricambi, but unsure if its just the valves....or the pump...or both. Any advice would be appreciated as shipping to a Ferrari certified service garage is over $1,000 one-way.

I can't see how it is being caused by the roll over valves.

Dry it up and run it to see where it is leaking.

As above... if there is fuel on top of your fuel pump...

its a bad fuel pump. Replace it.

Roll over valves will crack and smell of fuel but no we gasoline. They're just associated with venting of the tank.

Fuel on top of pump = Replace it.

Looks it could be from the fuel line connection.

It might be from the fuel line.

I thought that too.. and bought a test line when my passenger side pump went. turns out the plastic cracks by the nipple it connects to. That's where I'd put my $$$$

Since the fuel is sitting on top, my bet is that it's either a leaking connection or a broken nipple at the connection.
As others have said, clean it very well and run the engine while feeling around. It's most likely a VERY slow leak, so you may have to run it for several minutes before you get a shiny spot on your finger tip as you touch different areas.
    Good luck!

Thanks all who replied. Followed your combined advice & cleaned out the fuel after removing the access panel. The pressure regulator on the top of the fuel pump which is divided into 4 sections has one of the sections leaking. Fills up with fuel while running & ends up with the fuel running over the top of the pump as well.

I ordered a new pump & gasket from Daniel & Ricambi which is expected to arrive on Monday. He mentioned during discussion this is unfortunately not an uncommon problem for this year / make.

Looks to be a relatively simple replacement from other posts I have read. Will update following parts receipt & replacement attempt.

    Cheers,

I'm glad you figured it out!
Now you have an opportunity to do an instructional post on replacement of the pump ;)
Don't forget to disconnect the power from the battery prior to replacing!!

It is common for those pumps to leak there. The manufacturer changed the type of plastic that the pump cover/pressure regulator is made from. The new pump should have a amber/yellow plastic cover. If one pump is leaking, the other is probably not far behind. I would remove the other access cover and inspect it.

My new to me 2001 360 Spider had an inop fuel gauge right after I bought it. Apparently the fuel sender is combined in the fuel pump so you have to replace the whole thing. The dealer is fixing it for me (thanks CNC). The reason for my post is if you look at the 1st picture of this thread you notice the access panel in the 2004. 2002 and older apparently have no access panels. The tech says it makes a 4hr job into a 12 hr job. I was wondering if at some point you could get a newer panel and replace the old one? How common are problems with the fuel pumps on these things and wondering if it'd be worth doing in the first place? This feels a little frustrating as I did do some research before buying but something like this always seems to come up.

Did you create a DIY post showing your process?

It requires a complete new, redesigned convertible top assembly. It would be less money to sell your car and buy a later one.

    +1.

Once you replace it, you should be good for a very long time. Can't predict it... just happens.
