I tried to look at this car in 1998 when it was for sale by Wide World of Cars in Spring Valley, NY. I called and made an appointment to see it, specifying that I wanted to drive it. When I drove over an hour from CT to see it, it was buried in the back of their storage shed, the battery was flat and there was no way to get it out, start it up or drive it. At the time, the mileage was 46,557 and the asking price was $38,500.

Naturally I didn't buy it and it languished at WWOC for around three more years until 2001 when they finally got serious about selling it and dropped the price to $24,000 and the mileage had dropped to 41,407.

The ad in 1998 described the stainless steel exhaust as "new".

I bet 41,407 was really 47,407. Typo in the listing.

So...if this is 1984 400i 5 spd with vin 55019.....then my 1985 400i a/t with vin 55027 must be a very early '85 model, or are the vin's produced in sequence ? I have seen a thread which states our vin's are "odd" numbers, that would leave 3 vin's to find. Anyone out there have vins between 55019 thru 55027 ? Or any info/data on the break between late '84 to early '85 ?
    Just wondering...maybe I have the first 1985 ?

    Thanks, Gary

I think Sam typoed this. Every other part of the ad says 1985. I'd love to see the chassis plate instead of that silly US added VIN.

14 400is (11 autos, 3 manuals) were produced in January and February 1985 before production stopped for the switchover to the 412. The last 400i has been reported as 55523. Ferrari road car serial numbers were odd numbers during that period and were assigned to all the models being made, apparently in the order they began production.

    Wow --- several VERY serious Ferraris in that shop ! I think I spy 2 or 3 250's, a 275, a 308, and a BB-LM  at least.... maybe some others.

The 400 they have for sale is definitely the runt of that litter :)
