It is possible to contact Dick Merritt at DOT if he isn't retired. Dick Merritt runs (ran?) DOT and as many of you know is one of the original founders of the FCA http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/whos-who-ferrari-universe/346725-richard-merritt.html . They have all the records of the cars that were imported and brought into DOT compliance. I did this with mine. For a small fee they sent me an official DOT document for my records. The document gave the date of importation, who imported it and that it was officially brought into compliance. If interested, we could get you their number.

    YIKES!!!!

Pretty scary seeing this part, as it is the real gut-check time....

But....Meeting Sarge, he seemed to like me...

Well, I think so, he consulted his buddy JoJo...

I didn't get growls or bites, so hopefully they approved.

Is that red paint around the headlights / windscreen frame etc. a previous color for the car, or just a primer coating?

It appears that the blue hues are the new red....Lovely, and very flattering to the shape.

The car was originally Rosso Chiaro.

I have always known it as blue. It has spent the better part of it's life as blue. Currently, it wears a blue that is Pontiac matched blue color which it was painted in the 80's.

When we repaint it, we are sticking with the blue/tan theme.

The cancer will be cut out. In the end it will be nicer than it left the factory like the other OMGJON restorations. Concours wankers be damned!

Just when you think you dodge a bullet, you look back and see several more sitting in the revolver.....

It is amazing to see a car like this stripped.

The paint was last touched in the mid 80's, maybe earlier. This is when it went from red to blue.

The damage to the nose and the dings, plus the rust, were pretty much to be expected.

The damage to the driver's side rear door area/intake are a complete surprise. When the car went to Jon, it looked rough, this wasn't an area that even caught your eye. The repair was fairly well executed (in terms over cosmetics and longevity), but still pretty rough work.

I have no idea when it was done, but would have to guess the damage might have lead to the repaint and color change.

There are actually two well known Ferrari guys that owned the car during this time frame that the repaint could have happened. The transition period is kinda vague, so I don't know which may have been custodian at the time. One is still actively involved in Ferrari stuff, the other has passed, but his son is an occasional F-Chatter. Maybe we will find out more in the future....
