Yeah, somewhat similiar to my dad who got polio in 1937 and was bed ridden with paralysis and diminished Lung function. I can't remember if he was in an iron lung, but the family had the funds to send him to this new place called Warm Springs Ga. Through rehabilitation in the Pool and constant physical activity he was able to walk again. The paralysis left him except for his left leg and some slight back issues. He lived to be 81. The human body is an amazing machine. Btw he also meet Roosevelt several times while there. Back to the regularly scheduled program.

I only spent 4 weeks on the neuro rotation, and my recollection of transverse myelitis in head injuries is weak. I seem to remember transverse myelitis and a differential diagnosis with increased intracranial pressure which can cause a herniation involving the foramen magnum.

But I am unsure why there would be rehab. The ventilator suggests that C 3, 4 and 5 are involved which is a "high" cord injury. Anything below that would be paralyzed, so why the rehab?

Also, I understand that Schumi's team performed a craniotomy which should have prevented (or at least mitigated) the herniation.

So, are you thinking that it is infection and not trauma?

I hate to be a wet blanket, but this thread title is misleading. As the article clearly states, he's been moved from one hospital to another closer to home. Of course this is encouraging, but let's not misrepresent the facts. On top of that, why do we need another thread?

Here is an answer. Take it for what is is worth:

Die Liebe zu Corinna brachte Michael Schumacher zurück | Ausland | Blick

    Here are the interesting bits:

According to Bild he can breathe on his own. He is still supported by a breathing machine, but he no longer relies on it. Also life supporting measures are no longer required.
He reacts to Corinna. He can't speak yet but reacts to her voice and communicates with his eyes.

PS: The University hospital in Lausanne indeed has a rehab facility, where he was taken to. So it is more than just a hospital transfer. He is on the up, ever so slightly.

FWIW indeed. IF true, it's very encouraging. It would be nice if a family representative would say this publicly. Until there is an official statement I'll continue to be skeptical of the press.
