Read that Ferrari and Merc will test cars fitted with titanium skid plates in free practice at Austria

Hopefully they bring back the sparks...that was a signature of F1 cars and it looks awesome

Wonder why tracks will allow this.

On (motorbike) track days titanium knee sliders are always outlawed because they destroy the track surface when they inevitably have a crash.

I'm struggling to see the point of this!

The first thing the drivers are going to do is complain about being showered in sparks and not being able to see properly when they attempt an over-take, and it's not going to improve the actual racing at all!

The next thing you know they'll be piping in the sounds of V8/V10/V12 engines through loudspeakers around the track to make the cars sound better!

It's just more pointless tinkering that's failing to deal with the real problems of modern F1! (The expression: "Papering over the cracks!" springs to mind!)

So now the sound of F1 will be titanium scraping the track...?

You might be right, but a few sparks and the odd banana skin is not going to do any harm, they might not sound as good but a few fireworks at the back might look better IMO..

I'll draw the line at missile launchers and land mine on run off areas though ;)

FREAKIN posseurs! There are posseurs everywhere. Where are the men doing manly things? Ferrari owners are waxing their Ferraris until the clearcoat burns through. In the 60's people tracked their Ferraris and drove them home. Now nearly every owner has a microfiber cloth! Sparks, megaphones, and electric motors are in F1. BMW i8 THREE cylinder hybrid pipes "active sound" fake exhaust noise to the speaklers!!!!! OMG our world is falling apart.

just FYI- the old cars from the 80's and 90's that did all the sparks had tungeston skid plates... that is why they were so bright.

What they've done is quite literally added firework sparklers to the cars. This is so pathetic.

No one likes firework without a big bang.

Bring back a proper engine, then when can talk about sparklers...This is so ****ing lame.

At least they're considering a standing restart after a safety car period. That's the best F1-related news I've heard in a long time...

Might as well not bother with the safety car then and red flag it.

Absolutely! That's what Sam Posey needs to say instead of waxing poetic about the long-gone glory days!

Not sure why everyone is hating on this so much, what they should have done is just gotten rid of the wood plank on the cars and replaced it with metal and not said anything about improving the spectacle and it would have cut down on the *****fest.

You people are aware the cars used to spark before they brought in the stupid wood legality plank, correct? Never seen so many people nostalgic about a wood plank, I would be glad to see it go away. I can see why some see this as artificial, but IMO the most technologically advanced cars on earth having a big slab of wood on the bottom is ridiculously stupid.

Apparently, they'll allow the lapped cars to overtake, as they do now, and then continue to trundle round till the SC lights go out, then re-form on the grid.

Makes no sense to me either. Red flag it and just let them stop in whatever positions they were in when the incident occurred.

Then we've got the dreaded 'start under the SC' scenario - start on time (TV), do some parade laps and then start again.

They're apparently doing it to 'improve the show'. Yet more artifice I'm afraid..... Given the starts are generally considered the most 'exciting' part of the race, why not split GPs into two halves, then we're guaranteed two starts per race and don't need to depend on the SC being called out at all...... Or three, or 4 quarters?

    Cheers,
    Ian

I understand why they mandated the legality plank, but even the most cynical surely remember the sparks looking pretty cool..... OK, it wasn't 'artificially' introduced as they're now suggesting, but so what? Should still look pretty cool, especially under the lights!

    Cheers,
    Ian
