My 2013 Cali is being delivered tomorrow. Will post pics later. My question is, does the Cali exhaust system have vacuum tubes like a 430 that you can remove and plug to get a better sound? If not, what is the best way to to increase the sound level short of a new exhaust system. I did a search but came up pretty empty. Thanks for any comment you might have Don
Congratulations on the new car. Yes the California has vacuum actuated exhaust valves. You can unplug the vacuum lines and the car will get louder and sportier. As an alternative fabspeed Motorsport sells a simple to install exhaust remote control system that allows any Ferrari owner to open or close the valves by a wireless key fob. This way you get the extra sports car sound when you want it at the push of a button and push the close button and the valves close and operate as stock so you can be quiet again. We have been installing and selling valve controllers for years in Ferrari and other cars. If you want more true power fabspeed Motorsport USA manufactures HJS German trimetalic sports racing cats and a high flow x pipe that works great on all California's.
Unfortunately this will not be possible on German roads: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuyrNrmRZi4]FABSPEED MOTORSPORT | Ferrari California Sportcats & X Pipe - YouTube[/ame] Great sound!
Hi Most likely the new Ferrari California twin turbo will have rear mufflers with vacuum actuated exhaust control valves and you can unplug these vacuum lines and gain more sound. When any vacuum lines are removed the exhaust calves default to open. We are waiting for a California twin turbo car. All the new cars are twin turbos from maseratis to McLarens and a set of free flow HJS Germany 200 cell sports race catalytic converter down tubes should truly allow more sports car sound, faster turbo boost / reduced turbo lag , some turbo whistling and another + 35hp before a tune. The new turbocharged cars will pick up big power from simple modifications as turbocharged engines don't need back pressure and respond in a non linear fashion.
I invite anyone with a new California twin turbo to cruise by fabspeed Motorsport so we can put the car on a lift and analyze the factory system . It will be fast and no charge. Should be interesting to see the new twin turbo engines exhaust.
The Cali30 has different exhaust headers and engine mapping from the Cali and is 66 lbs lighter, 30PS/14lb-ft up on the pre-2013 model. These enhancements are on the level of difference between the Scud/16M and the F430. The car is loud and very punchy when you run it aggressively in manual sport mode. Fabspeed offers enhancements beyond that. By design, the Cali must serve up a dual-personality to make it acceptable as a daily driver but the original Cali has limitations, which is why Fabspeed offers its upgrades. Nothing beats driving and listening to a Ferrari with its roof down.
what do you do with the vacuum tube and its male counterpart after you disconnect them? It there a way to cap them to prevent junk from getting sucked in?
Cap at least the hose end, preferably with something that won't degrade or melt, and is large enough it can't get sucked into the engine. I suppose you can cap the exhaust valve end, too, but it only leads to a diaphragm, and you would need a cap that would withstand heat. Getting junk sucked in the hose? If you don't cap it, the engine will behave as if you have a vacuum leak (which is exactly what you will have with an uncapped line). You need to cap it if you pull it from the exhaust valve diaphragm.
I did it yesterday - plugged the tubes with a wooden golf tee, and secured it. Left the male diaphragm end tube uncapped. I must say I like the end result. I havent cruised in it yet, mostly acceleration and deceleration. There is more "crackle and pop" now upon deceleration, and the downshifts are also louder. Very pleased with this $ 0.20 modification. Start up has a nice growl now.
Does anyone have videos of how their exhaust valve mod sounds? This sounds like an awesome simple, cheap upgrade.
I have on my 2010 Cali the Capristo exhaust equipped with the possibility of controlling by remote control the opening and closing of the exhaust valves. When the exhaust is operating in automatic mode commanded by the ECU the valves modulate according with the engine r.p.m. and the sound is in my opinion superior to the one of the standard exhaust. When the valves are fully open using the remote control we enter into a new dimension and the sound is something fantastic. I know someone that has a Ferrari with a V12 engine and the other day I happened to have passed with my Cali near his house with the exhaust valves open. He didn't see the car but he heard the exhaust sound and when later on he found out it was my Cali he repeated to me that he couldn't believe it because he said it sounded almost as good as his V12.
Actually you can easily control the opening of the valves with your right foot! All it takes is a little practice. My office is in the center of a very small town. Every day I leave I just hit the gas slightly hard and get the RPM above 3,000 and the valve will open and stay open, and sound great, echoing from the buildings. I've said this for years, learn how to drive the Cali (or FF) and you can open those valves whenever you like, except sitting at a stop light maybe. And when you want it to be a little quieter, like doing a 2.5 hour drive down the interstate, the valves will be closed and won't blow your brains out.
The Valve Controller is $295 and the installation is pretty straightforward. It comes with two keyfobs that allow you to remotely actuate the valves at-will which is great. Gives you the ability to just put the car in "loud" or "quiet" mode and forget about it. We don't currently offer this by itself on the website, but I can get one out to you no problem. We have them in stock and ready-to-ship, so just shoot me a PM! You're absolutely right, however, the beauty of a manual valve controller is that once it's set in one mode or the other, you don't have to worry about it abruptly changing volume because you hit a bump or sneeze. That is the original non-turbo California featured in the video with Fabspeed Sport Cats and X-Pipe. - Dave (in Marketing)
