Let's see all those thing that "good" mechanics do for our cars, in other words; all those things you have found badly wrong from your car.

Only five years ago and 4576miles ago changed timing belts and bearings in 308
width is 20.5mm originalas are 25mm

What do you think your mechanic did wrong? Installed the wrong belts? Trimmed off the extra width?

Looks like you're 2 years overdue for a major. Make sure to look at the timing belt drive pulleys when the belts are off. Worn bearings there can cause the belt to track crooked like the picture.

    +1.

To mikael82: I'm not quite familiar with all the details in 308 timing area, but I do wonder what exactly in you picture suggests that something a (your?) "good mechanic" did to cause this problem, other than perhaps forgot to insist that the timing belt should be replaced every three years regardless of mileage ?
And how many other related "moving" parts or components are way past due for service or replacement in relation to total mileage and 25+(?) year age of the car ?
    Just curious.

The little flaps on the edge indicate that the belt wore off as it was run, I think. This indicates a tracking problem. I'l bet the belt covers were filled with rubber and fiber dust.

When I got my 348 the handbrake didnt hold the car and it actually rolled on a slight incline! :-(

Thought I'd just have to adjust it since the car had had quite a few expensive services including one for £5k/$8.5k not too far in the past.

Was a bit shocked to find the handbrake shoes worn down to the metal and one of the shoes held on with a badly fitting nut and bolt instead - total fail IMO

I see, that last "major service" was done by pensil. (outside my country)

Car will go through restoration, I haven't open anything else yet, drove nice and smooth, well smooth as belts could slide out by fingers, so much slack is there.

    More:
Mechanic has broke coil ignition wire, and replace it with copper wire, sliding it to the original red tube, hiden. (last service before importing this car) Distributor cap had bourn hole through and interior brass parts where melted. You can see rest of wrong wire under four sparkplug wire.

"My car cuts down and does not start anymore, can you help?"
"Yes bring car here, we will find your problem..."
    ------------------
"yes, It clearly is fuelpump issue"
    "how did you fix it?"
"we just aded extra gound wire to the fuel pump!" (or charged owner for new fuelpump)

What is the name of this shop? If it is such a concern, others need to be warned.

For sure I can't be sure, one particular shop has done this, but car has spen't all it's time in Switzerland, sold it few weeks ago, nice car.

First timing belt picture is from a car that had last and second to last service in Britain.
Distributor cap picture is from a car that was imported from Germany.

I like to think this as an international effort, please post more, I know there are even more juicy ones!
