Guys, Does the panorama roof in the FF cook the interior or is it a special glass that keeps the heat out and the light in? Looks cool but I wondered how practical it is? Does anyone have it and regret getting it?
Regardless of the glass, you can easily have an internal film applied that will deal with heat input. It is a 3M product with available tint ranging from zero to limo 3M?s Window Films Block Heat and UV Rays Without Dark Tint I had the film applied to all the windows of our FF (which does NOT have the roof) since we travel a lot out in the desert. It really does work remarkably well. So I would not worry about the cooking; if you want it get it.
I have it... Ferrari apparently used some special glass that keeps MOST of the heat and damaging rays out... I don't park mine outside so I really can't tell I love it though.
Yes. The windshield is huge and will let in a great deal of heat. The difference is remarkable under high heat load conditions.
We have the glass roof and had an FF before without. In our experience, most of the heat seems to come in through the windshield. The glass roof has a decent tint that seems to block most of the heat nicely but still has good visibility. We had tinted film installed on all side windows and the rear window. that helps, but think i windshield tint film would make the biggest difference. Get the glass roof if you want it: we love ours and wouldn't order the car without if we were to do it again.
I put about 400 miles on our FF demo last weekend over a three day period with my wife and six week old daughter in tow. Even with the intense Colorado sun and temps hovering in the high 80s-mid 90s we were never uncomfortable inside the car. We also had the car parked outside for the majority of its use and still didn't experience any heat related issues.
I think this answers the OP's question. Depending on use it may still pay to apply the 3M heat film product to the windows and windshield. It makes a huge difference. Running out in the Sonoran Desert in 110+ heat, the inside of the car stays cool and collected. My wife used to complain bitterly before the films were applied. Now only the sound of the wonderful V12.
So just to double check did you apply the film to the windscreen and it does not interfere at all with visability?
I'd check to see if your local laws prohibit you from tinting your windshield, it's a big no-no in Colorado.
There is a ceramic fil that is clear - virtually no tint - which blocks a significant amount of heat. Pretty sure it is legal in all 40 states... I have a friend who put it on his truck and it made a huge difference. I just have no local installers I trust... John
As Jumpinjohn says, you actually do not need to select a tint to get the heat shield. You can select a clear film and get the same effect as a tinted one. The heat effect is in the infrared, not visible light. In my case I actually selected a mild tint -- 80 % transmission for a slight glare reduction and cosmetic enhancement. But that was my choice.
Gotcha, I guess I assumed that window tint was being talked about. I'll have to look into your suggestion as an alternative.
To be precise the 3M Crystalline series films range up to 90% transmission Window tint & window tinting for your car or auto - 3M US At that level there should not be a problem (regular eyeglasses are only about 90% transmitting). Also UV protection for that fine Ferrari leather.
How does it work with "SunPass", guard gate stickers which are read by the gate, beach pass etc. which are usually applied to the inside of the windshield? I have heard that the ceramic tint although not nearly as dark, is much better than the darker tints for protecting the heat in the car.
As you see here Window tint & window tinting for your car or auto - 3M US 3M claims that their films do not block signals, being nonmetallized. I have had no problems with the Crystalline film, which only goes down to 40% transmission. The Ceramic line takes it down to 30%, still not limo dark of course.
Yes, reviving an old thread. Any noticeable effect on nighttime driving from this 3M film. The link says none, but I would like to hear from real-world driving experience.
I really don't see Ferrari offering a $17,000 roof and not doing their homework. Just buy the damn thing !
Otakki... If you're looking for a windshield option, Boardwalk Ferrari installed Huper Optik ceramic on my 911's windshield 2+ years ago, no issues at night, day, etc. BTW, I got max legal tint for Texas on the other windows. Best money I've spent on the Porsche. And, not much spent either...T
Great to know. Is it completely clear for the windshield? I would prefer that because I only need decreased heat from the windshield.
