Is is just the RHD? Went for more than double the high estimate! 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS - Silverstone Auctions
Look at what this 328 GTS with 22,000 miles sold for at the same auction...$132,252!! 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS - Silverstone Auctions
That doesn't sound like a "current" full restore from the description. Total mechanical refresh 25 years ago, and belts and suspension recently. Sounds like great maintenance, provenance, and service history, but other than the repaint, last major refresh is already old. That airbox looks godawful, the carbs are filthy, and the concours repaint blacked out the lower sill, which should be body color on a carb GTS.
What model Ferrari can you buy for 100K??????????????? I'm really tired of people *****ng when a 308 goes for good money! Think about it, our last Tahoe was 52K our new Equinox was 35K. A Ferrari for under 100K is a deal. IMHO Lost
Not everyone cares about dry sumps and fiberglass apparently I agree the price is shocking, but the market is really moving (bubbling?) these days so I supposed it shouldn't be such a surprise.
Lost - I doubt anyone on this board would disagree with the 308 being "worth" six figures on driving enjoyment alone. However, it IS - at least - newsworthy when a great, but not Platinum, example fetches more than double its high estimate and some 4x what you can buy them for in the US. Thus my original question, is it just the rarity of RHD?
The 308 was an ok car not by any means a concours car! 308's values have been rising in the Uk for around 12 months now and seem to be raising good prices. The 328 was in good condition apart from the engine bay, there was a large amount of corrosion to the engine, looked like it had been left outside in damp conditions. 328's values have almost doubled in the last 6 months, 40K was the going price at the begining of the year, now 60-80K seems the norm if you can find one! Regards Roy
I think that it is that we are just a little shocked. That is a pretty big price, historically speaking. I am really amazed. Do you think this is a bubble or are we heading here to stay?
There was a 328 in a dealership in the Uk for just shy of a £100K! That has now gone, it had 7K miles on the clock.
There are just too many of them, imo. Looks like a bubble to me, but who knows. I still don't think Dino's are worth what they go for, so it could be the new reality. I just think for that kind of money there are too many other options. You could get both a 550 and a 355 for that money and as nice as a 308 is, it can't compare to either of those two let alone both.
I don't know... a 246 doesn't compare to a 550 or 355. I think a 308/328 is a LOT of car compared to the later stuff. Performance is cheaper than style.
I agree -- this one looks well sold. Based on the photos, it wasn't a full disassembly/respray, and the rust visible on the expansion tank and airbox makes me think the car was used extensively following the resto. Maybe a RHD GTS is worth a premium in the UK.
How much to ship a car to the UK? For $140,000 I might be persuaded to sell provided I could get it over there at a reasonable cost.
I'm with Dr Tommy, I'm surprised by those selling prices. Good for everyone all around. IMHO I think the 308s are LONG overdue for this. I also think the prices will stay there if anything will go up a little more for the best ones.
It is also a little hard for me to get my head around having a 100K car out in my garage. (I'm not rich like a lot of you guys are )
You're right About that. Neither a 550 or a 355 can't compare to a 3x8. When It comes to style and looks both 550 and 355 are way behind!! For that matter the same for all models that came later. The 458 might be the exception (but soon will be traded for 3x8 prices!)
...or the hotter cams ; ) It's still a lot more than anyone expected including the auction company. Prices in EU vs US are still hard to compare also. 308s worth much more in EU.
I would, and did, take a 308 over a 355 and 550. They are really not comparable cars at all unless your only goal is to purchase "a Ferrari". You will have totally different experiences in both those cars. Whether it is better is up to the driver. Neither of those experiences interest me right now. Also substantially different service experiences. So, hard to make that comparison IMHO.
One would have to believe there is money in important 308s from the US to EU with this kind of price disparity.
Glad I'm a 328 owner again! But I'd be willing to part with mine for only $99,000 and I'll throw in free shipping!!
