I know everyone is saying not to ask, but you can take a different, non-direct approach to see how he feels by starting off with "I was afraid to bring a Ferrari to C&C because sometimes people have different reactions to exotic cars and the people that own them", and go from there.

I have had some interesting conversations with others about owning an "expensive car" like a Ferrari, and I know that it changes how some people feel about you, like it or not! Sure you can take the "I don't care" attitude, but that's not always a good way to proceed when your talking about a business, personal relationships, etc. Some people consider those that buy expensive cars as reckless with their money (no one needs a car like that, why not give more money to charity, etc., etc.) and it's best to just not deal with that if you don't have to IMO. Some people are just more conservative than others. And to be quite honest, some just don't get exotic car ownership.. period. I know I had a lot of misconceptions before I decided to pursue one.

On a funny side note, I have a friend that I share another hobby with that lives in the same town.. we've done a lot and know each other well... we both bought Ferrari's without telling the other, and found out at a Ferrari get-together when we saw each other at the event. We both discussed how we keep our Ferrari ownership to ourselves. Was a very nice surprise indeed and we now keep in touch more, talk cars, and attend car shows together when we can manage the time. :)

Drove mine to work today, and have been a couple of times a week in the last 2 months. A few people have had comments or questions about the car. I just lay it on the line. My 40 year old Ferrari costs waaaay less to buy, insure, and maintain, than your new crew cab pickup with all the bells and whistles. And, it is a lot more fun! Gets them thinking.

Spot on and it just goes to show the unique branding/perception people have of the Ferrari name. Ferrari has done too good of a job creating their perception to the masses and owners have to suffer the drama that goes a long with.

Your examples show just how extraordinary that perception is, when people don't know the value difference between usually much more expensive boats, horses ect, compared to a 20K ferrari.

This is not really as relevant an example for the broader question because car guys tend to get it. If you are a car guy, then you understand the actual economics of Ferrari ownership and a car guy client might even respect somebody a bit more knowing they own a Ferrari (particularly an older one where some work is required to find parts and maintain it). The real issue is with non-car people (or, more specifically, non-Ferrari people since many car people also have a wildly distorted view of Ferrari ownership).

Unfortunately, the world is made up mostly of non-car/non-Ferrari people and they have wildly distorted views of Ferrari ownership (and those inaccurate perceptions can affect how they assign raises, promotions, etc).

Three times this week. People still stop to look at it. No negativity from anyone. My boss knows I have it. He also knows how I got it. I have no mortgage, no car payments, and best of all no children to put through college. FWIW I'm an hourly, blue collar worker.

I was going for three times in a week today but my FOB battery died and I didn't have a backup so I couldn't start the car! :-(

Never fear, I grabbed four of those suckers at lunch today so I am set. Lets hope the weather holds out.

I never have driven the 430 to work--the Elise gets enough attention.

I appreciate you stepping up and showing others that they are worrying more about what other people may think about them than living their own life. After all a Ferrari IS just another car. Yes some may say my opinion would change IF I was a Fcar owner yet wouldn't that be a tad presumptuous and judgmental? I question society therefore I am.
