I want to put flow through primary and delete secondary cats on my 355. I started looking at the secondary bypass pipes online the price is outrageous. I called a shop in Detroit that builds exhaust systems for any car. They do a lot of work on high end race cars. The guy that owns the shop is highly regarded as one of the best in the state.
He looked up pics of the oem and and aftermarket pipes called me back and said this is very easy for me to do.. he said he will need the oem pipe to work off from. quoted me $500 if he has to build the flange $600. If I buy 5 sets $350. Mandrel bent ...guaranteed
10 min of research saved me $600....

If he had a oem one to go off from he can build it... this is not a complicated piece I have no idea how people can justify $1200-$1500

i was just talking to a friend about this today. The price for cat delete pipes, even replacement cats is just insane.

    Do you have a 2.7 or 5.2?

The 2.7 is stupid simple. The 5.2 is more complex but still should be half what everyone sells them for.

I'm going to have a set built...he told me if I bought 5 he would discount them..He needs my oem pipe to make a jig or whatever he needs to duplicate all the dimensions. Pete asked about his 2.7 I am not sure if the pipes are the same. He may need Petes to use as a template.
I just thought about this when I looked them up online.. I was like WTF? $1200 for a couple of pieces of pipe and some welding....any shop that makes custom performance exhausts can build this for next to nothing.. and they can and will

Guys, what is the benifit to delete the secondary CAT ? And, will this result in a CEL? I know there is a downstream TC - will this result in higher temptures causing grief with that TC?

I was just on the phone again with Jim Gautz at Gautz Enterprises. Pete he says a bypass for your car is not a problem. He also said they build all the prototypes for Chrysler,Ford,Chevrolet and Toyota. He said he can easily build flow thru cats and he builds custom headers so he said he can build 355 headers that go in the clamshell. One thing he did say is he might have to put for off road use only. Thats for his own liability protection.

Dave I want to replace my headers before they crack and get them on a shelf. With these aftermarket ones they are bullet proof and no more worries. Fabspeed makes O2 spacers to minimize throwing a CEL. The flow through cats and deletes will boost performance and should reduce engine bay heat. I am also going to put a challenge grill on mine for more ventilation

Dave I didnt see anything in that thread that mentions aftermarket challenge grill. I will keep my oem one but for driving around the aftermarket one will be fine or I'll get one from Russ at ferrparts

Randy, I started the entire thread about the aftermarket grill from exotic auto recycling. I then found the OEM (new) from Eurospares so I purchased that one instead.

Bought the Fabspeed ones at 700$ for my 2.7

I don't want to bash Fabspeed as I am a big fan of the company but looking at those pipes, I could tell they were severely Ferrari-taxed.

They're so simple, I would assume they cost no more than 150$ per set to make (Based on nothing but my assumption)

I didn't shop around at the time because I just bought the entire setup from Fabspeed.

I heard Larini sold them for 399$ a pair.

They probably cost less then 30 bucks to make. When you buy steel in bulk tubing the biggest expense would be the flange.

Dead on for material cost just add an hour or 2 labor to make them

3 feet stainless or inconel tubing
Couple off the shelf flanges and you got it

    :)

Tim, some don't understand the cost of being in business. I love when people that know nothing about manufacturing make these comments. If it's so easy, I don't understand why these guys don't make them and sell them to us for $150.

Labor, materials, equipment, rent, insurance, I can go on and on.

Some of these shops only build exhaust for very high end cars take a shop like Jim's they build them for American hot rods to Porsche and rolls Royce they have a lot more people paying the bills. These by pass pipes are simple for them. Look at the primary by pass pipes. Think that's hard for a guy whose been in the business for 30 plus years ? Come on
