Rubber garage tiles

My Dad just did his garage in the Costco garage tiles. I don't have any experience with them, but he likes them a lot.

 

This looks very cool.

I was looking at epoxy applications, but the added cost of preparing the floor (cleaning repairing cement, etc) looked daunting.

 

Most of these floorings are advertised on the muscle car shows I have watched for years so their advertising seems to be limited, at least in the US market. There is a rubber flooring that you piece together that is sort of a mesh design. This design allows for leaks to fall below the walking surface but their flaw is obvious, one would have to remove the tiles to fully clean-up a unfortunate leak unless a proper 'catch system' was not set down.

I would prefer a flat tile that has easy clean-up and is sealed against any automotive of household spills.

 

Most tiles are plastic. RaceDeck which I use in my garage are plastic and work great. They just snap together just go to their web site.

 

I LOVE my Racedeck floor, its been down 12-13 years now and still looks great when i clean it (hardly ever). I even took it with me when we moved to new house/garage. It wont hold up to weld splatter or plasma cutting but everything else I have thrown at it has not harmed it.

 

do you care about look or durability?

 

I had race-deck and it was great. The only reason I changed was due to my older dogs not being able to make it out in time to do their thing. A dog urine cleanup takes hours with the plastic flooring. Move the cars, lift the flooring, clean the tiles, clean the sub floor, replace, and move cars back in.
Had epoxy coating done with covebase along the walls and now I can hose the urine out if needed.

 

I use racedeck tiles. Love them!

I'll join in the chorus recommending something flat and easy to clean instead of something that will trap liquids underneath. Also (if it's relevant to your usage) think about the ease of rolling a floor jack across it. While the flat tiles that look like they're polka dotted with quarters seem common and boring, I think that practicality is the reason they're so common.

I've done the epoxy route, and let me tell you it is technique sensitive and after some years, it shows wear. Also absolutely critical that you have a good moisture barrier under the concrete, or it will fail. To test it, take a piece of plastic (a section of plastic bag or plastic wrap) and cut a square. Tape the square to the concrete making sure to seal all four sides. Go out the next day and see if any moisture is trapped under the plastic.

I've considered the plastic/rubber tile, but my concern is the collection of materials and spills in the openings and also ease of using a floor jack, not to mention sliding on my back. The tiles are good for looks and quick and easy but that's about it.

I'm designing a new garage now and considered actual industrial tile (not the plastic snap-together), but now am considering a highly polished concrete finish (like the floor in Costco or a large wharehouse store). When I was a kid, I worked in grain elevators and the floors were this highly polished concrete and when a farm truck showed up that was leaking fluid, which most were leaking hydraulic fluid for the PTO, clean up was easy. It was also easy to sweep etc., the only down side was slippery when wet.

 

I put down simple vinyl tile. Glue it down. Start from the center and work out. Pick a color or pattern. Strip and wax every couple of years. Use a single pattern/color or make up anything you want. GTS Bruce

I liked the pattern..

make sure you leave room for expansion..if the sun hits it..they buckle if they dont have room to slide..thats why they are floating floors

I clean them with windex...the look is there...but porcelin is a better way to go.

I went with Racedeck as well. There are other similar brands, but I think Racedeck was the original and they aren't that expensive, so I didn't look further. I would strongly suggest that you check out GarageTrac. It is quietly made by the same company and guy (CEO mentioned above) who make RaceDeck. They claim it's a slightly lower quality, but I can tell you it is awesome and pretty much bulletproof. I love those floors but can never get one due to welding, grinding, etc.

I guess I'm stuck with paint.

 

Racedeck also makes aluminum tiles. They are too pricey in general to do an entire floor, but I think you can do a section of aluminum tiles in the welding area and then do the surrounding area with their normal tiles.

 

I need to large and area for that to make sense but thanks for the heads up.
