Interesting, certainly no such tag on my car. Does the US version of the owners manual make reference to it as the euro doesn't?

    '81 GTSi, 34641, NOV '80 build date.

So when did the Model Year change within the Calendar Year and was it consistent?

I heard stories of parts just being used until exhausted or not put on until more arrived, so ...

For example mine seems to have never come with the "Built by Pinnifarina" badge on it.

Yes, I think the early models of a sequence used up spare parts from the previous model run. For example, my #31309 has an original silver steering wheel, not black. Also, mine didn't come with the Pinnifarina badge either.

Mine just says June 1980 inside the door. There is no plate, front or rear, that has any other numbers.

    Cheers,

    George

Where IS the assay. no.? On the 456, you can't miss it. You open the hood, and there's a plate that says Assembly Number 43056. Nothing in the 308, front or rear, like that (Unless it's under the spare, which I'm not going to bother with).

    Cheers,

    George

Here the plate from my car. I guess March was the beginning of this beautiful series of automobiles. Aren't we the lucky suckers who get to drive them?

The assembly number for a 308 is under a small paint flap that is on the main upper chassis bar at the left (= driver's side) of the engine compartment, more or less above the oil cooler mounting bracket.
Note that is is on the horizontal (upper) side of the chassis bar, and not on the vertical part as on 328s; here enclosed is a picture of the location of the Assy Number of my February '89 328 GTS: it is not that relevant, but gives you a good indication of the location of the assy number; just remember that the one for a 308 is on the horizontal side of the bar, at about the same location...

Okay, but it's not a five digit number. Mine has the VIN on the passenger side and 349A on the driver's side, whatever that is (Which I already knew about). I still don't know where you're getting the five-digit assembly numbers from. Like I said, by 456M's is right in front of the engine, on a metal tag.

This is what I was looking for. Where is the corresponding number on a 308?

    Cheers,

    George

Yes, that's where mine says 349A, but assembly numbers have five digits in this era. How do you extrapolate five digits out of that? Is there a formula? This seems ridiculous to me.

    Cheers,

    George

I started a sticky thread about 9 years ago addressing what that number was. I don't think we ever figured it out other than, perhaps, it was just the order number during the manufacture of the bodies. If memory serves, there was no obvious correlation with that number and the final chassis/VIN number. It was all over the place.

I give up. I'm going to go drive it. I don't care what the assembly number is. :)

That door plate listing VIN, month/year of manufacture, and gross vehicle weights is a US Federal requirement - vehicles produced for other markets often don't have a similar door plate, for other manufacturers as well. My 84 Euro QV imported into Canada some time before 2000 doesn't have a door plate - for Euro 308s/512s imported gray market to the US, the US importer had to add a plate, that's why you'll see some gray market Euro Ferraris in the US with a plate like that which also has a line "Imported by: ".

Which era? The 456 is 20 years newer than the first 308s, 10 years newer than the last 308! These cars are from an older era, where a hidden stamped 3 or 4 digit number is all we got. ;)

Well, ALL OF THE EXAMPLES GIVEN IN THIS THREAD ARE 33XXX OR 34XXX! All I want to know is where the hell is everybody getting these numbers? If A means 80, then everybody would have a number ending in 80. That's obviously not the case, so where is the assembly number coming from? Dr. Cosgrove just said the 349A stamp MEANS NOTHING, so I find this stupidly confusing. Is it buried in the VIN somewhere?

It's a simple question. There should be a simple answer.

    Cheers,

    George

Those are just the last 5 numbers from the VIN - for example, here's the engine compartment plate from my 84 GTS QV, number 52703:
