were all 246's fitted with a rubber seal to the engine/boot dividing panel?

Just been researching the site, and the compendium, but cant get a clear picture on this. Question: Were (all) 246's fitted with a rubber seal to the top edge of the dividing panels between the engine bay and boot (...or trunk for the non English speakers ;-)

I checked some images of the car (02424) from when I picked it up and it appears to maybe have a round shaped seal? (visible left of the expansion tank in the attached image).

On page 173 in the Compendium the M series appears to have flat or maybe rib profile (Matthias?). Incidentally, I'm using the M (and early E) as a reference point - 02424 is an Aug / '71 E series.

I think I read on FCat that Sp1 (Cicognani sponge) was correct, or maybe #8 on the ferr parts list.

So guys, what have you got on yours - round, rib or..? and if different when did they change?

That's the post I'd seen but then couldn't find when I went looking.

So, if I understand correctly per Enzoson ('71 model ?), yours and Dman550 its the Cicognani style and if its later, say '73, its the round top rubber...

Simon, can you tell me the year and maybe month of your car please.

Just want to be sure to get it correct for the early E.

Paul, none of my E series cars starting with #03050 had a seal on this lip. I have a photocopy of the road test by Motor magazine from July 1971 of #01616 which was an M series and in the photo's you can just make out the Cicognani SP1 type foam sponge seal on this lip on that car.

I don't know when Ferrari stopped fitting it but I have a few photo's in my collection of original unrestored E series cars that do not have it.

I'm hopeful there's someone with an original car built around the same time 02424 who can confirm.

 

My car is a May 1973 (05898). I should point out that I am not saying the Cicognani rubber profile is correct for my car. It is what they sent me to fit in this area and it is their SP1 foam rubber profile, as Ian says.

My car is currently being painted so I have not fitted any seals or rubbers yet but your post made me look at some old photos of when I first got this car. It had no rubber on the front lip of the engine/boot divider and it had round hollow section rubber but it looks to have been replaced probably during a repaint it had in teh late 80's/early 90s.

Sorry for any confusion caused. Hopefully we can establish what is correct for your car and mine.

I can bring 01616's rubber trim (from 1978) to your car if needed.
Same H profile as in the Cicognani pic.

Sp1 (Cicognani sponge) is correct for M-series Dinos.
I can`t say when the change to round rubber profile was... I would think during early E-series production.
With the round rubber profile fitted Dinos (mid and late E-series for sure) the seal on the engine side disapeared, only the boot/trunk side would be correct.
I have found many period pictures without rubber seal on the engine side.

And more importantly for those that are crazy on details, do they have the same orientation (since one side of SP1 is slightly higher than the other)?

Looks like Cicognani's sponge profile sp1 was also used on the sides of the boot (trunk) here on 01616.
Any ideas of what was used for the rear edge of trunk and the trunk bump stops which are different from engine & front lid stops? Hard to tell from this pic.

Sorry Vince, no definitive answers but I have Two questions and a request...

1. Here's an image of a boot/trunk I saw yesterday - this is a 74 model RHD; is the bottom ribbed trim and the side rubber moldings period correct? and were these correct for the early E series?

2. The small image is a Superformance seal "Rear Boot Rubber 24604260"
Is this the one for the side and if so which series is it correct for?

3. Please, any guys with Euro model (or other) delivered from the beginning through to the end of 1971 please post some pics of your rear boot/trunk.

The picture you posted is the correct for a late E series I believe. The early E series used the Cicognani sponge seal around the side of the trunk and had the same seal used around the engine bay fitted to the lip across the rear slam panel of the trunk.

Vince, those bumpers on 01616 look similar to those used on 911s with whaletail in the mid-1970s. See here: RSR.at whale tail rubber supports

 

Paul, it is Cicognani's seal and the car is #03342 which is a February 1972 build. My car #04054 had all it's original seals in place when I bought it and they were the same as these.

Did you come to a decision regarding whether the sp1 seals have the same orientation (re one side of SP1 being higher than the other)?

In the link http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/206-246/295757-dino-engine-rubber-trim.html attached by Simon, both of high sides of the sp1 seals on dman550's blue Dino appear to be facing forward...I think...

 

The higher side should face towards the outer edge of the panel closing onto it. The seal is destined to spread out flat towards the edge of the panels to give maximum protection from water ingress by leaving as little of a gap as possible on the underside of the closing lid.

 

Also note that the rear trunk seal textures are different in post #13 versus posts #14 & #19. #13 shows longitudinal ribs whereas #13, #19 show a texture more like what goes along the sides of the engine bay.

Yet another question on what's correct for which year/series/model of Dino...

 

Post 13 is correct for a late E series car (from Autumn '72 build I would think). The early E series and presumably M series used the same seal from the engine bay for the rear lip of the trunk.
