This is what we are aiming for colorwise- Radium Green 510- what a beautiful shade. This image is of a resto in progress at Roger Bray Restoration. My Pre A left the factory in the same color.

The Super 1500 Type 528 2 piece case motor has been sent to our local 356 Guru mechanic for a complete rebuild- lots of parts to be located - so Im expecting a long and expensive journey for this chapter in the resto of Coupe # 51319.

Trannie will then be next which looks a straight forward exercise as case is good and cluster in nice order

Really great work and can only wish your skill set was mine.

Most all the work you have completed was also completed on my 356. Lots of rust, poor quality prior fixes.....perhaps from the High School shop class.

Anyway, know the outcome will be beautiful and love the color you will spray.

DJ that looks like one very spoiled 356. Either its parked in your lounge ...or you have a seriously cool garage

Did that have the Hirth roller bearings? (And is there a better modern substitute?)

Hi Jon. Yes it did have a Hirth RB Crank. I had to source one which has just come into our shop this week . You could use a later solid crank but then your Motor is no longer original as a 528. It's the roller bearing crank that makes them so rare and special IMHO .

The Hirth Roller Bearing crankshaft for our engine has arrived from the USA.
It looks in great condition. It will require a rebuild with new bearing & bush replacement, but on the whole it’s all there and in good shape.
A marvellous piece of engineering. These are the exact type of cranks used in the Carrera 4 cam motors.

    Thanks, Ross.

Did not know there were roller crank engines other than the Carrera engines. Unless I missed the fact that your car is a Carrera? None-the-less, once your car is finished, it will be stunning!

Love to spend time in the garage. Now that fall is here and winter is close at hand, will be spending more quality time in there.

True - although I've heard that they might not be as durable. That said I'd probably go original as you're doing.

Nice garage (and garage contents). How tall is the ceiling to accommodate the lifted T-bird?

10'-6" clear from finished floor. Have to be careful (read as pay attention) when lifting the Baby-bird since the radio antenna is a bit tall. I've already bent it once.... None of the other cars have an issue with the height of ceiling.

BTW, Ross, did you mention the color of interior on your car? Have an acquaintance with a black Cab that is having the mechanicals installed and will have a green interior fitted. Think this might just be a nice color combo. Would you consider green leather in your car?

RB motors were introduced by Porsche in 1951. The type 528 with its RB crank was released in Oct 1952 and "incorporated the larger Solex 40 PBIC carburettors from the now defunct Typ 527. With an 8.2:1 compression it produced 70bhp at 5000rpm. Transmission was via a new Porsche Getrag gearbox with patented split-ring synchromesh. A top speed of around 100mph and 0-60 in 14 seconds made it the most potent production 356 yet."

While the specs differ bn the Carrera 4 cam and these push rod engines - the latter RB crank motors were a high performance unit for installment in Porsches top line cars.

My interior was originally a tan leather with matching cord seat inserts and door cards - will stick with that . However I really like green leather interiors - very striking and will look totally cool against s black paint job. My buddy had a primrose yellow speedster with green interior - wild looking color scheme which suited the speedster to a tee
