It's your pool, if you want to perform a tipsy whiz wheel that's between you and Rusty.

Gotta be honest, I read it the way Nizam & John B did; if you're a 747 driver and "know" the answer, please don't spoil it.

OTOH, if you're a GA guy, do you see anything unusual? If so, what? Try and have a 'guess' and post it up.....

The last part I read as separate and aimed at anyone who was familiar with the display and ergo already knew the answer.

In any event, I guess Lou won't try this game again! :(

    Cheers,
    Ian

I can see a quick scan of post it would be missed, not a big deal, however...

this tells airline guys don't respond, just post "got it".

after the question, says a second time to just post "got it". The pros have already been told to just post "got it", so I took this as now talking to everyone else. If that didn't clear it for you, then same line says "give others a chance to play". how can others be anything else? :)

I love the original question, but I love this followup discussion even more. :D

    +1 :)

How are others going to play if not by posting up their guesses?..... :D

    Cheers,
    Ian

the OPPOSITE! others can't play when the first person posts their guess (if right). others can only play when keeping to self. I actually sent my answer to Lou by PM so I could get some credit if right. :)

Fair enough. "Ambiguous" at best..... The key "if right".... Seems it's hard enough that we've had quite a few different answers anyway!

Can't tell you how much I now hope your 'secret' answer was wrong! :D :p

    Cheers,
    Ian

jeez chill out Rob, what does the winner get a turn behind the yoke?
Or maybe a free upgrade from steerage to 1st class on your next transatlantic flight? :p

Well, I surely did not need any calculations to see something wrong. No GA or commercial time at all and I am not even a pilot.

Lou- Time for you to spill the beans.

The solution is obvious, it is unusual to see a 747 only doing .84 Mach.

If I remember correctly from another thread Lou had mentioned that the -800 cruising speed wasn't as high as earlier variants.

Oh, I think I see something else... although not knowing much about the 747-8 PFD, it might be nothing special.

I read it like the other 75% that just posted "got it". :D hopefully the 25% aren't actual pilots. ;)

ATC: N12345 cleared to Las Vegas airport via the HOLTZ seven departure, Daggett transition, then as filed, climb and maintain five thousand, expect flight level three three zero ten minutes after departure, departure frequency is one two four point five, squawk six five six two.

25% Readback: N12345 cleared to Las Vegas airport via the WALTZ eleven departure, Doggoneit transition, then as filed, climb and maintain five hundred, expect flight level three three five ten minutes after departure, departure frequency is one two three point four, squawk sex five six nine.

    :D

you were an airline pilot though! :) I'm not 100%, but my answer would only be obvious to GA pilots who fly over 18k, not many. I can go to 25k, but don't like to unless flying over a 18k ceiling military that is active.

If it's the obvious thing, I presume Lou must have an explanation for why it's actually correct, or he wouldn't have posted the picture. Since he asked about the cause, I'd have to say I don't know.

The other thing I see, if it's what I think it is, is more interesting. Still don't know why it's there, though. And it probably isn't what I think it is.

It's worth mentioning that it's not the same everywhere, other countries are lower than the US/Canada but I'm not aware of any that are higher but it could just be a gap in my knowledge. If memory serves Iraq is 14k.

Theres all sorts of strange ICAO stuff that makes little or no sense to us, since we do it right over here. One thing in particular I don't get is why they have transition altitudes and transition levels- and if that's not confusing enough why aren't they the same in all countries!
