I am so unbelievably pissed I couldn't go to Sunday in the Park, me and my mom were driving up there but the minivan we were driving broke down five minutes from my house, and we had no other car, so we had to go home. It's going to take awhile before I can live that down.
What a shame and my heart goes out to his friends and family. Having driven at Lime Rock many times when I was vintage racing, I know full well how you can get into trouble in the Downhill. Miss the apex and, if you're going flat out like most small bore racers are at that point, the camber of the track and your speed pulls you well out to the left and, if you get wheels off, you will either end up in the tire wall, shoot out back across the track to the infield or possibly catch a wheel and flip over. It's probably the most dangerous part of the track if you make a mistake. RIP.
I made the drive up Sunday. Beautiful morning on open roads. I dined well at Stacked Kitchen in Sharon before getting to the track and parking in the small Italian car zone. Dom from NY had his red Gt4 there as well. We both got two laps in of the circuit (a greak perk for classics). You get a sense for how comparitively rare Ferrari's are compared to Porsches by looking at that car park! They went out before us and the line of Porsche's just went on and on and on...then two Ferrari's went out! We did have A/c envy though. The heat and humidity really built during the day and finding refuge under one of Lime Rocks trees while watching the racing was the order of the day. Stirling Moss stopped in front of us in the Osca. After a few minutes it turns out the passenger and inadvertently switched off the fuel pump. Seconds later he was on his way. A sweaty drive home, but the car performed just fine on the 160mile round trip. We flew in on Friday, and hit the track on Saturday. It was a perfect temp all day long. I came up because of the ABARTHS. My father use to race the Abarths in 1957-1964. He bought team Roosevelt in 1960, there were 5 cars, and he kept the twin cam to race. But we did not keep them, any of them, as they were race cars and you always wanted the next hottest thing. Mahlon Craft ended up with one of the cars, so I wanted to meet him. The Ferrari you see , #7, was built on ferrari 330. The fog lifted on the day was super beautiful. It felt like an October day. We got there on Sunday about 7:30 am, only about 4 cars on the track for the show. We watched them all come in, the could go find the ones we were really interested in. So it was fun to see them all march in, Jim in the P 3/4, he showed me the cars they will sell to others that want to race over in europe. At noon we left, ended up at the Mark Twain House, and the my next favorite thing other than Ferrari is art. The Wadsworth Museum. I love the Renoir painting of Monet "Painting" in the garden. And a nice Pollock. Holy smokes! Please bring that to our Ferrari and Friends next year! Damn, I did not know you drove that on the road....but then again...P4/5 You must like making people crap in their pants!
Absolutely! I usually pass on the vintage show day, I'd rather see cars on track...but missed a real gem, would've loved to see the P3/4 in person, especially being driven on the street!
That's funny because I think I found your Chevelle at Caffeine & Carburetors last week: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Gotta love the muscle cars of the 70's and the way they punched you back in their seats... Had two friends with them, a 65 GTO and a 65(?) Mustang Fastback.. aroung corners you were better off in a rowboat but in a straight line they were fun.
That is my Chevelle. The picture that you took looks good. I have been bringing it to quite a few events this year and I plan on bringing it to the next Caffeine & Carburetors event.
