Good morning all! I have Liberty mutual, which is good insurance in general, but I'm concerned about two aspects. With LM, they will NOT pay inherent diminished value in Colorado, and they do not have an agreed value option, only "Actual Cash Value", which I'm guessing means auction price for similar.

What insurance do you use? I checked Hagerty, and while they do provide these options, it's at a cost. LM is $1k/yr, Hagerty is $2k/yr. Thoughts? And with whom do you have your insurance and is diminished value and agreed value important?

    Thanks!
    Rick

I have Geico, and the costs for 3,000/mi per year are very reasonable. I did a check of 3-4 different places, including Hagerty and another exotic specialist, and Geico (as my third car, spotless record and over 50 years of age) came in with very good coverage at about $1250/year. My car is a V8, V12's would be more.

I also have my Ferrari insured through Condon Skelly. 1988 328 GTS, insured for $50k agreed value, premium is about $180 per year. Hagerty only wanted $1250 per year for the exact same coverage. What a joke. I also have a1967 Pontiac GTO insured with Condon Skelly, also $50k agreed value, also $180/year premium.

I have Geico, I added to my existing policy and it is only around $70 a month. No mileage or use restrictions and roadside assistance.

I honestly don't care about agreed or dimished value or any of that, though. All I really care is that if something happens, they fix the car properly or replace it with the same thing. If you're worried about that, you may want to spend more for a collector policy.

I have a policy with Haggerty (formerly Lant Insurance).

It's a Silver Wheel Collector Car policy. $565 per year, full coverage for 12 months. When the car turns 25 years old (in 5 years), the policy drops to $250 per year for full coverage.

    The only conditions are:

    1) I cannot track the vehicle
    2) I cannot use it for work/commercial vehicle
    3) I cannot use the vehicle to go grocery shopping
    4) I cannot use the vehicle to go the bank

When I added an 07 612 to my GEICO policy, they wanted to charge me $2400 per year for full coverage on the car - and indicated they may not be able to insure it on the renewal, which they later recanted. I'd been with them for 30 years with a clean record.

I called local State Farm agent: Same coverage for $650 per year.

    Go figure.

I guess those Gecko commercials must be very expensive. :)

    am I authorized?

both my grandfathers were in WW2. I have no documentation in my possession to prove that though.

seems that in the name of growth, USAA has gotten pretty lax in their "authorization" standards.

I have USAA for my 456M (Well, all my vehicles and my home). No mileage restrictions/$1,600.00 per year. The only restriction is I'm not supposed to track it, but it's not that kind of car anyway.

Sure, I could pay less, but USAA has protected me from insurance fraud attempts in the past, and their service has always been stellar. I don't mind paying a premium for peace of mind.

    Cheers,

    George

My Ferrari 308 and Pontiac GTO are insured with Hagerty. I'll look into Condon Skelly.

I had USAA for 18 years. Never filed a claim until I filed three within a four year period, all legit (water damage issues and a storm damaged roof), all homeowners related. They didn't renew me...said I was a high risk. Total of all claims was less than $20K.
When I found new homeowners insurance, they required I also transfer my auto (high risk, and all). USAA was incredulous when I terminated my auto policy and couldn't believe I would leave them. I respectfully directed them to the young man who terminated my homeowners policy. He had two years with the company when he cut me loose, and he told me it was his decision not to renew. I did get a nice check from them (Subscriber's Savings Account) when I closed everything, auto, banking, savings, etc.

USAA has changed a lot over the last few years. Not the original company I signed up with in 1992 and certainly not your Dad's or Grandpa's company either. Ask any homeowner who lives in Florida, specifically south of I-10.

Of course, "they know what it means to serve..." Puke.

    I have Leland West.

Be careful with Condo Skelley at least in NJ you can only drive the car to shows that is why it is so cheap. Be sure to verify that. I was ready to buy it till I asked about what it covers. No overnight trips unless you are going to a show. It is basically for car shows not pleasure driving. That is why it is so cheap

I've always thought the same thing. I love their commercials, but their advertising budget must be slightly less than the national deficit!

It's like furniture companies here in the Northeast. Jordon's, Bob's and Bernie & Phil's advertise so much that half the price of their furniture must go into paying for their advertising. Good grief!

Unfortunately with most all insurance companies, they only want your premiums, not your claims.

At least under my policy, Condon Skelly allows you to drive your car out to dinner, out for random pointless drives, etc. Just not to replace your daily driver and can't be left outside on overnight trips except if attending a show. In over 10 years of owning collectible cars, I've never wanted to take one of the old buggers on an overnight trip unless I was going to be at a car show. I have normal cars to drive if I want to go on a family vacation.

I also looked at Leland West and they told me the EXACT same things Condon Skelly did and their premium was EXACTLY the same. I went with CS since my regular car insurance agent had a deal with them and that way I only have to deal with one agent.

For folks that have Haggerty/etc, how does it work when it comes to your liability?

I keep hearing folks switch to Haggerty due to the fact that they can do established value for any car damage. But you never hear anything about the liability end of it...

How have Haggerty/Grundy/etc reacted when someone was injured? Was the liability coverage as excellent as the damage coverage?

Do you folks only get property/damage coverage through these custom carriers, and the liability is with your home insurance carrier?

I had similar experience with them. Was USAA for 35 years. Got hit by a kid (USAA INSURED)driving his mothers car. Totaled mine. Messed around with me on settlement of the car (Corvette Z06) and my injuries. I am now with SF for daily drivers and Grundy for my collection. Both have better rates and great service....no problems with SF at all!!!

Nice to see someone evaluating his risk. Is the greater concern over the loss of a $50,000 car or slamming into someone and causing million$ in liability? So many owners overlook their liability in the great rush to protect their investments in their cars. Very shortsighted. Carefully investigate the liability side of these programs. Hard to find one that insures your liability for much over $100,000 and if you forget to ask, you get the low price that comes with even lower limits. Remember that the next time you go on a club drive and follow the brilliant young surgeon in his Enzo. Those crowing about such low cost insurance should really read their policies to see what is and isn't covered and for how much (or for how little). All insurance policies are not alike and the old economic saying holds true for insurance as well. There are no free lunches. Oh, and agreed value only matters in the event of a total loss and check out the many restrictions on use.

I went to a Porsche club event recently where one of the speakers owned a very high end body shop. He told a specific horror story about an insurance company denying him the ability to repair the car correctly. Later I had the opportunity to ask him the company's name. "USAA". I have been with them forever, but I guess that they have really become 'just another insurance company'.

I agree with 'dakharris' above. We sometimes 'don't see the forest for the trees'.

Absolutely correct. You're likely to find that you can't get the kind of liability coverage that will REALLY protect you through your auto policy alone. You should probably be looking into an umbrella liability coverage policy if you're worried about coverage for millions of liability. Those often have requirements for the primary coverage handled by your auto policy, but then handle the excess liability.

I'm certainly in the minority here, I have Erie Insurance, and have had them insuring our family in various forms (business, home, personal cat, pers auto, comm auto) for 2 generations now (my dad, and now me).

Erie is expensive (I'm going to decline specifics here because insurance comparisons are almost always apples and oranges) but their service really is above and beyond my expectations. Plus, I have a personal relationship with my insurance broker. His dad insured my dad, and now he (the son) insures me.

I wouldn't trade my Erie coverage for all the savings in the insurance world. Sure, I pay a lot, but I also get "no questions asked" service and coverage for my claims!

Heck, we even had a case where a scammer defrauded one of our businesses. Our agent was savvy and cared enough to get our losses paid out as a claim against our business catastrophe insurance policy. They're a quiet company, but when I need them, they fight hard to make me happy. They have ALWAYS subrogated our deductibles from a plaintiff when we've been involved in a not-at-fault collision. Superb. Also, if an Erie Insured has a collision with another Erie Insured, neither party has to pay their deductibles for the repairs. I learned this once when my dad ran his car into my wife's car in our neighborhood. Plus, they have trusted preferred-relationships with the BEST body shops in town (you know, the local mom/pop shop that you can actually trust to fix your car correctly). My poor Dad has crashed his corporate Mercedes so many times that his car has had more front-end work than a Beverly Hills housewife - so that's how I know, from experience.

I don't know anybody else who uses Erie Insurance (my wife had never heard of them before they started protecting her) but that's fine by me.

I did not know State Farm offered agreed-value insurance for Classic Cars, but it looks like they do.
    Here is a link:
    https://www.statefarm.com/insurance/auto/antique-classic-cars

    That web page says:

"When you choose antique or classic car insurance with us, you and State Farm will agree on the value of the car. If the car experiences a total covered loss, we will pay this agreed-upon value, rather than the actual cash value of the car."

The footnote about it on the bottom of the web page says:

"Not applicable in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Texas — Contact your State Farm Agent for details."
