The tensioner bearings, one was ok and rolled smooth, the other had a gritty feel in the bearing (they were original from 1999 and not changed during the first belt change. Both tensioners still had good pressure no rattles. I think we used capristo replacements on the bearings. Water Pump bearing was still smooth as was the alternator idler and all accessories.

In a lot of cases the belt is still good, it's the other parts that will cause the belt to snap.

That's why it is important to drop the engine (as it was designed to do) so that all other parts can be inspected and replaced.

I agree with you Ace that the belt is not to blame most of the time. These engines spin fast and the bearings get alot of abuse anywhere on the accessory drive or timing system.

Thats why I checked and replaced the tensioners/bearings during my timing belt service.

Of course you get a better look at all components with the engine out undoubtedly. I was able to spin all components and was comfortable with the method we used. In the end the investment was very small and since I bought this car with no records it didn't bother me.

Moral of the story, service the timing system regularly to avoid hassles and problems.
