I've owned 3 Ferraris - all bought used with plenty of mileage: 328 - 30K miles 523 BBi - 13K 612 HGTS - 24K All were purchased right after they had their majors. The way I figure it, if they can make it that far, they are sorted and probably reliable. The recent major also assures me they should be maintenance free for a little while. The first 2 were very reliable; except for the typical oil leaks they are known for. So far, so good with the 612. Thankfully, at the mileage I purchase at, I don't have to dwell on investment issues. I just enjoy a sorted angry car.
A colleague had a 30,000 km 2000 360 F1, the alarm system drove us nuts. As did the leaky F1 pump reservoir, the alarm horn that needed replacing when the battery leaked, the constant need for battery charging, the funky key fobs, missing PIN codes, the broken door handles, the air leaks around the windows, the clunky shifting, the need for ECU error resets and the mediocre stereo. When he sold it he almost had to give it away and he bought it from the dealer. I have a high km 91 TR which was battered and unloved when I found it which in comparison has been a virtual Toyota Camry. Reliability is a virtue in any car, especially in one so pricey to fix.
That I did. Picked up a gorgeous R8 and have a BAC Mono coming in to replace it (the lambo)! I am slowly shifting away from the notion of having crazy street cars and moving towards having one that is still awesome yet reliable (I've owned a R8 in the past, things are bulletproof) and having some real serious track toys! Now to just fine tune those driving skills! Some more racing classes for me it looks like. Where in DFW are you located bud? I am out in Colleyville.
Its honestly bulletproof. I put I want to say between 40 and 50K on my last R8? Only issue was an 02 sensor went out once and warranty repaired it in under 2 hours. Thats with several track days on the car. Clutch still had plenty of life as well (single clutch vs DCT on older R8s)
Wow! I just finished 8 pages in two days, but it was worth it for both education and entertainment. When people ask me about the 355 (manual) that I just bought, I tell them that it is, depending on with whom you talk, either the last of the old Ferraris, or the first of the new ones. Now I'm hoping it is the last of the old ones. ;>)
