Not for a Coupe. On the contrary it seems fairly high to me.

 

Yup that's top dollar IMHO.

Like most Marques expect the mercedes 300sl ,, the rule " if the top goes down the price goes up" still applies here . That said in the last 3 years the early series one coupes have been gaining ground against the open cars . Due I part I think to stiffer chassis as some are now used extensively in historic racing and just how ridiculously beautiful they are .
The current auction results show this trend is continuing .

Good source is for production numbers is XKE Data - Statistics - Jaguar E-Type (XKE) information, articles, photos and register. Basically, the S1 coupes outnumbered the roadsters, but not by much. If we strip away the 2+2's (since they have a different perception in the market compared to the 2 seat FHCs and are not as desireable), then the roadsters outnumbered the coupes by several hundred units.

 

Generally the 2+2 is classified as a "separate" model from the FHC and OTS.

The OTS production is about the same as the FHC with the S1 cars. Once S2 hit (1968), the OTS was double the production of the FHC. With S3, there were NO FHCs, only OTS and 2+2.

Given that the S1 is the most desirable version, then it's fair to say the production of both FHC and OTS are about equal.

 

I have owned many vintage Jags including XKE's and Sedans. The V12 XKE is a *****cat, but a very smooth engine. I hated mine although I put about 100K on it.

 

Assuming this is referring to my post, the market doesn't "speak" to which is more attractive. Almost all - indeed I think all - of the authoritative sources agree the coupe is the more seminal and important design.

But if you own a vintage car, which is inherently a second car, the convertible is more desirable.

I own both. The coupe is much more attractive to me.

But I also find the 300sl coupe more attractive than the roadster too.

And the Dino 246 gt more attractive than the gts.

 

Have a '72 V12 convert. Great car! Smooth, fast and beautiful....

 

Just bought a 69 E that came with D type wheels & uprights. I LOVE D types too so this is WAY cool.

The 69 was sort of a barn find. My crew chief met a 77 yr old gent who needed to sell it.

Funny how this is in the eye of the beholder. Convertible over Coupe every time for the XKE, for me. (Not that I am an "authoritative source", whatever the hell that means).

 

Just drove my E for 1st time yesterday. The hood looks so long but it feels so tiny around you, even SMART cars look sizable, but she has a nice power to weight ratio.

Don't think I want to do 160 in it though

 

I had the same thought when I first drove mine - it's SMALL! Looks bigger than it really is, very intimate inside.

 

Try driving the V12....the hood from the drivers seat looks like it goes on forever.

It is interesting I think that it is much easier to find a nice OTS than a FHC.

When I was looking for about 1/2 year, nice coupes were quite rare.

I would find 3 to 4 times as many OTS for sale as coupes.

My theory is that the coupes were unappreciated and under priced for many years,
hence they just didn't receive the care and $$ that the OTSs got.

I was lucky to buy a very nice early '67 coupe from a friend (glad to pay full market too).

I used to own a S2 OTS and just never really loved it......

I agree it's hard to find nice coupes. And yours looks really nice.

I have an all original (original paint, interior, radiator!, glass etc) sub 20,000 mile dark blue/red interior 1962 coupe. All the original paperwork including bill of sale and license plates and photo of the owner taking delivery. Same mechanic for 35 years. These cars are just amazing.

My OTS is sub 30,000 miles, zero - zero - rust and fully restored. But the coupe gets the passion especially as it is as it left the factory.
