    I have a 328 and am active on the 308/28 site but am casually considering selling it and POSSIBLY purchasing a 355. I do all my own mech/service work and have a question...

    I have read in various places that 355 service "must" be done with the engine out. Is that a true statement or is it based on the fact that it's much easier to do with the engine out so that's the way it's normally done. For example, can 355 cam belts be changed with the engine in place or is it physically impossible?

    A guy posted on here that he's done it with engine in however must feel that's more work and belts where swapped with no check or adjustment of timing.

    + when engine is out you can paint manifolds and do other things necessary

    Yeah it's not to hard to get the engine out. Plus it's a good opportunity to balled the brakes and clean up everything.

    From what I've read you also have to use a hole saw to put a large hole through the frame so you can get the crank pulley off?

    If you do all your mechanical work, embrace the task of doing an engine out service on a 355 yourself. There are a few threads on here outlining the experience of participants on this forum who have done it. Most recently Ernie did an amazing thread on his DIY on a 348 without a lift! Yelcab (Mitchell), just did a thread on a 355 using a 4 post lift.

    It may seem daunting just because how many people have taken an engine out of a car for gods sake? But these cars were designed to do just that with the subframe and if you do your homework and take your time I am very confident a good DIY can accomplish this himself and really have a blast doing it. How cool is it to have the whole engine and drive train sitting on your garage floor to work on and clean and tidy up? If you aren't pressed for time or facility for me it is the ultimate DIY.

    I don't think that's the only way, you can unbolt the front motor mounts and raise the front of the motor to clear the rail, but as said why do all that when you can easily drop the motor?

    You can do it whatever way you want engine in will cost you a couple hours labor, we did it in two 4 hour evenings.

    Or have the engine out if your motor is leaking oil from the cams and valve covers and you suspect the timing is off, then that is the better way.

    All up to you, if you are not a DIY on this car your choice will probably be limited to engine out.
