Transmission preference

Just wanted to gauge preference and relative value. I know many are torn and my personal opinion is that it probably has little bearing on value as some like one or the other and some don't care. I know I only considered manuals when I bought mine, but I actually would consider an f1 now even though I still prefer manual.

 

I've had both. I would much rather have a three pedal car. Anything else is an automatic like my DD.
Plus I love the clanking sound of the gate on my 355.

 

I own an F1, and have been in a manual F355 (but haven't driven one).

I am very glad I have the F1.

If I owned a Dino or a 308, I'd want it to be manual (I'm aware that is the only choice, but you understand my point - it suits the car)

From the 355 on, I think the manual looks old, sounds old, drives old, and is not in keeping with the rest of the car.

 

Could not have said it any better. Imagine a modern F1 car with a stick? Ferrari has always been and will always be about F1 and I love how they employ the F1 technology to road cars. If you go against that philosophy you should by a different car.

 

I love the stick on my 550, but when i get round to getting a mid-V8 i want F1. Stick suits a GT more than a sports car IMO

 

Spot on. For a GT car I'd prefer a manual.

But for a genuine mid-engined sportscar, I'm glad I've got my 6 speed 355.

That is interesting. The style of the 355 is closer to the older design style. It is beautiful but is much more similar to a 288 GTO than the newer design such as a 360. I am not knocking the F1 but to say that the manual looks old is crazy. Than I guess the 348 should also be equipped with the F1, which is what the 355 evolved from.

 

I guess a F40, 288GTO, Ford GT's are not genuine mid-engine sports cars.

 

As I said, it's personal preference.
And my personal view is that the open gate and "clack-clack" of the manual is very old fashioned and adds no value at all to a 355.
And I think the people who make such a fuss about that are the same people who try to pretend that the '95 is somehow more valuable (and faster) than the later years.
As far as I can tell, this rubbish is very much an FChat thing.

There is NO evidence that the manual cars are worth more.
And there is NO evidence that the '95 cars are worth more.

Unless you have a genuine personal preference for one or the other, just buy the best damn car you can find, and ignore all the partisan crap you read on here.

I went with the best condition car I could find....period. It happens to be the F1. My neighbor bought a 99 GTB gate a few months later. After driving both, I love the F1. I voted that I could and still would....go either way. It was all about condition for me.

 

I think delusional is the person that bought your white 95 with almost 20k for close to $79,000. But that's my opinion.

The truth is, despite what the FChat legends will claim, there is no higher value in either gearbox, or in particular years.

The value is in condition, mileage, SERVICE HISTORY, colour, model etc.

Edit...opps sorry 30. The numbers show 23 to 30. Most of the 23 could go either way and I would assume most are like me, just looking for a close to perfect car.

 

The 355 is an old Ferrari. The car was initially built with a manual, so to state that it does not fit the car is wrong. Remember that the manual is not a 4 speed, it is a 6. This car is an updated 348.

I don't know if a car with a manual is more valuable than an F1 and I don't care. That is up to the individual. I personally think that condition and mileage play a bigger factor. Supposedly the 95's have more HP. Five more if the literature is correct. Again, it would not make the car any faster. Compared to most of the newer sports cars out there this car is not all that fast.
I own a 95 and one thing I can say is that I will not have to deal with any immobilizer or F1 related problem. Watson stated it perfertly in the other thread. Whether you admit it or not the F1 is going to have more issues than a manual so this may effect some buyers purchase decisions. Just as having to perform engine out services.

 

The F1 system is a thing of wonder but in the 355 was an early version that is really more of a gimmick than anything else. A really expensive clunky gimmick.

The cars are more than 15 years old now. Fixing them will become even more expensive. I expect that F1 cars will be significantly cheaper in the future compared to the manual cars, for good reason.

 

It's funny when people talk about the F1 and how dated it is compared to the newer PDK type transmissions as if the Ferrari gate is not prehistoric itself. You can get in a newer 997turbo and row the gears a lot faster than the clackidy old school 355 tranny. But that's not the point. I like driving my buddies gate and hearing the clack, just as I like driving the old school F1. The fact is, they are both old school by today's standards and are both fabolous transmission for a lot of reasons. Why pit either against each other. They are both great for different reasons. You can shift a Hyundai transmission faster and smoother than the 355 gate. Who cares!!!! It's a Hyundai.

 

This is the exact demographic you'd want to poll to find out what the Ferrari buying public would prefer. It's honestly way more slanted to the manual than I thought. 38 to 9 is overwhelming.

 

10,000 355's where produced. We have how many active 355 members? 50?

And please quote the FACTS that show the F1 has more "issues" than the manual version.
Again: there aren't any.

According to the four Ferrari mechanics I have asked about this exact topic in the last year (who combined have over 100 years of experience working on Ferraris and all are "factory trained"), they have all said that there is NO evidence that the F1 is less reliable than the manual 355.

I can,however, quote some FACTS which show that the F1 355 is faster around a racetrack, but who really cares?

Bottom line is, a lot of the people on this website don't seem to know the difference between FACTS and hearsay espoused by their internet heroes.

 

Tim, what do you know. You have only been working on these cars as well as being a member on this forum for a long time, compared to some of the newer owners.

To think that the F1 is going to be less problematic than a manual is delusional.
