Today I had the most fortunate meeting. I had spoken to a guy who is a friend of a friend about an f40, so he invited me to come and take a look at it in his garage. Well this very fortunate gentleman has about 150 cars that I would put at a total value of around $200 million. All post war. You name it he had it, and many times in duplicate or triplicate.

However, of all the cars he has, his favorite is the f40. So he has 5 of them.

Unfortunately I cannot show you any pictures (he asked me not to take any), nor can I name him. But he is a very charming and exceedingly fortunate man, with a similar taste in cars to me. :)

Cool...was thinking it may have been someone in Switzerland if so.

Anyway, I'm not surprised the F40 won. I still remember being a passenger in one like it was yesterday. Will never forget the experience and can't imagine another car recreating that feeling. :)

That's amazing. There was an American property developer Jerry Moore who (in the 90s) had well over 300 cars and (lore has it) 8 F40s. I guess its all relative, and the multiple examples simply shows that they love the car so much they can't get enough!

Why though? Drive one and presume all the others are going to appreciate so hold them as investments?

    All the best,

sorry guys. this fellow has been burned a couple times by people coming to look at a certain car he had on offer, and then taking all sorts of pictures and posting them on the net - or in another case, a couple of russians posing as buyers took pictures and then posted his cars as being for sale by them - he was not pleased.
so his policy now is no pics and before he allowed me into the warehouse we sat down and had a chat - he was checking out my car credentials of what i knew, who i knew, even going so far as calling some of our mutual friends. after which he turned into a super nice guy and he entertained me for another 1.5 hours while he took delivery of 2 more cars !!! (fcars, one from 66 and another from about '73, both well past the magic round number, and in absolutely flawless condition).

the f40's were all kind of different. different years, different mileage, different spec, LM etc

we talked about some of the coming trends, and thankfully agreed on what was going to be getting stronger soon. he laid out his plans for buying multiples of those models, and already had some targets he showed me pics of.

and for close readers of scm, i talked about some of the cars i had seen reviewed recently after pebble, and turns out he had been the anonymous european buyer of 2 of them. having taken delivery, he was displeased with one and is flipping it, and keeping the other. he is a manic perfectionist.

anyway, since i intend to do some business with this person, i have to respect his request. (even though he is not on this site etc), and not provide details. but put it this way - i am pretty sure he is on ldm's speed dial list.

So many questions! First of all, awesome and almost unbelievable story, thanks for sharing.

Did he have his preferences ("only supercars") or was there a big variety?
Did you ask him how often he drives his cars or what he drives the least?
Does he have his own full time mechanic?
Did you ask him if there was cars that he was disappointed with? Since he told you what he loved the most.

Also, at what point does a car collector become a car hoarder? Sorry if these questions come off as rude or ignorant, but I'm genuinely curious to how one handles such a vast car park.

I can understand why he's shy for attention, this Norwegian (passed away a couple of years ago) had a well know car collection somewhere in France... He was contacted by media all the time about his cars and every time he would reply "I have some horses too. Want to talk about my horses?" and hung up if the caller (often a car journalist) wasn't interested to discuss horses... Picture attached (around 1/4 of his collection).

he had a wide range of cars. modern supercars, to f classics. everything post war. he seems to like porsche and there were at least 25 911 variations there. he has one of everything important it seems. and if he doesnt have it now, he has had it in the past, including the holy grail.

he does not seem to like all italian cars- lambos were not present - bought but disliked.
he drives all the cars throughout the year. he has 2-4 guys who clean and exercise the cars. he had various shops doing the work depending on the marque.
the cars were parked so close together that you could not walk around them - he is running out of space.
you might consider him a hoarder, but he does cull the herd and is constantly changing the list. but the main difference is that each and every car was a 100 point car - no exceptions.

his favorite car? well as i put in the opener....he has multiples of many cars, but the most cars he has are f40's.......
