991 GT3 Pricing

I really want one of these but I have no use for it unfortunately :/

Great car for the money if you don't mind a 911. Way better value than a TT/TTS if buying new IMO.

 

Would rather see it in person and take you to lunch.

Joe, and any others willing to chime in, in your opinion would it be a mistake to trade a 997 RS for a 991 GT3? I'm considering it, as I've had my RS 7 years now ('08 Green) and have loved it, but considering something different and more supple on the street.

BTW I can't afford to keep both - have a '15 Speciale on the way too. Plus my 993 also sharing the garage...

Appreciate the advice in advance, if possible!

 

Bobby, if you can have just one, then the 991 GT3 is a car with a bigger usage scope, a car for all seasons, if you will. Yes, the RS is very collectible, but, as you have have described your circumstances, I see the GT3 as an excellent choice.

 

So is this the last production year for a NA 991 GT3? Or new allocations is still coming?

 

Joe, my garage will look similar come January 2, when my 991 GT3 joins the '11RS 3.8. As always I look forward to your POV on the 2 cars.

There will be a GT3 RS but whether it will be N/A or Turbo is up for debate, I have heard N/A.

 

I am told 2015 allocations are running out and the GT3 will stop production. I was able to get one of the last builds, barely…

No word on NA or Turbo for the next GT3 or not. I am grabbing one now being its NA.

A few thoughts so far that I know you can relate to, and others will find interesting.

Living with a 991 GT3, there are a few idiosyncrasies to note! I like to think of them as charming character traits! All perfectly normal, but things to be aware of.

Startup - You're going to get a puff or a few clouds of smoke when you start from cold most times. The engine is a dry-sump with horizontally opposed cylinders, so some oil not scavenged from the case migrates to the bottom of the rings and weeps into the combustion chamber, and the unit is designed that way. Think of this as a good thing, Porsche Ag's way of ensuring here is some lubrication everywhere at all times. Another reason why Boxster-type motors last longer than a standard configuration inline or V type motor is because there is lubricant still in the cylinder at start-up to help. My factory contact suggested letting the engine idle for 30-45 seconds prior to turning it off might help minimize smoking on start-up. Someone on another forum noted that whilst letting the engine idle, do not step on the brake pedal as this releases vacuum from the case. The vacuum remaining in the case at shut down keeps that little bit of oil from passing the rings which creates the smoke at startup. Either way, my Porsche Ag contact tells me that if ever Porsche has delivered an engine that just won't break, it's this GT3.

Idle & low speeds - If you have not owned a 997 GT3 RS with single-mass lightweight flywheel and lightened gear sets, its worth noting that the uninitiated will hear some strange transmission noises. This is normal for the PDK-S gearbox and occurs at idle or at slow creeping parking-lot speeds. I actually love it because being familiar with these type of cars I know I'm sitting in a special race-bred machine. Its an angry chattering/grumbling sound, but, as you take off in earnest and there is a load on the transmission it goes away, and you get nothing but smooth acceleration and lightning-quick gearbox changes.

All-in-all, the car is a joy to drive in every way, the ultimate way to get from A to B IMVHO. It goes & sounds like it looks.

 

A dealer I did not order the car with just confirmed to me that December is the last time the 2015 will be built and they will start with the GT3RS. They don't know when the allocation for 2016 will arrive.

Terminal velocity with the current engine recently tested to 334 kph (207 mph) - digitally indicated. Even with allowance for error, I must be missing something because Porsche Ag specifically said terminal velocity was 195 mph when the car was launched: 911 GT3 - All 911 Models - All Porsche Models - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG although that was with the previous engine. Perhaps they will release new figures?

Entirely possible. But there could also have been headwind. Either way, impressive.

 

I heard that Porsche typically understate public, corporate performance figures. The reason is simple: under commit, and over deliver, and you will look like a hero every time!

Do the opposite and you'll be a goat and will forever have to defend your numbers because no one else can replicate them. I think this is why sometimes there is so much debate by the press/publications -- were 'special' tires used, special gas & engine tuning, were they testing on a slight decline, etc.

 

Interesting thread; I decided to order one for European delivery. I have never owned a street Porsche and it seems about time, and the thought of European delivery and ability to spec exactly what I want, along with all the accolades and apparent rarity pushed me over the edge.

I had been awaiting the Z06, but the 3500 lb+ curb weight really irritates me. WTF? Having raced for years I'll take less weight any day and I suspect the GT3 will lap better on track, at least after 3 laps.

On Joe's advice, I think I will go with standard wheel finish instead of black.

On the extended range fuel tank, I was told it does not affect trunk space. What is the story on that?

 

I was told the exact same thing re: extended range tank not affecting trunk space.

I've listened to most everyone's advice here with the exception that I will go with racing seats. I was concerned at first that you could not adjust the height, but I've since learned the driver side height is electrically adjustable. And, supposedly for the U.S., these are the same seats as are in the 918!!!

 

After a long break , i am back to GT3. Just got commission number on 2015 991GT3. I am not expecting it to be same excitement level as scud , but this Gt3 is going to be more usable DD/track car. Cant wait ....anyone in OC with a 991 Gt3? I would love to see one up close and maybe get a ride. My car will arrive feb 1st week.

 

There are a number of cars running around OC, and I think Porsche Newport Beach may have one there right now.

Very nice Joe. See you in the neighbourhood sometime. I ordered a white one expected to arrive end of jan . I saw a sapphire blue gt3 today. Looks awesome pretty much in any color. I did not order sport chrono this time around. What were your results ?

 

I have never gotten over trading my 997.2 C4S and my GT3 would be a prodigal son sort of. I traded it for my first ferrari and soon I would have both a porsche and ferrari in my stable. I can't wait for a reunion.

 

The results of the sport chrono test as completed by my in-depth test are that it works perfectly (as clock or stopwatch) and that's its simply a cool feature to have. Nothing to be taken too seriously, more of a fun thing, that's all!

Meanwhile I am happy you are getting a car, as I am for anyone else who is, because I can honestly say the car is an awesome drive.

I'm also happy to see both Tony & yourself also getting white, its a great historic color for Porsche! My own personal decision to get white came simply from the book "The new GT3, Limits Pushed" (below) which Porsche Ag sent me. I looked at the feature car and said to myself: "that's exactly what I want!". My car is a duplicate of the featured car.
