I will be attending the wake Friday night for Chip, the passenger. He lived about 2 miles from my shop. I don't believe this accident will fade away. Given the fact that the 458 lights up in a crash more so then others may be a cause for concern. Maybe FNA may want to wake up their legal staff as there may be forthcoming repercussions here as in Paul walkers case... I just hope is was not alcohol related. Still a tragic loss for the families.
Condolences to the family and friends. We take chances every time we jump into an exotic and exceed the speed limit. I'm astonished that I'm still here, given some of the antics I've done. While tragic, it is a reminder for us all.
Ditto. While all of these car make a lot of heat, fuel tanks are robust and subject to government standards/regulations.
Doubt it's tank, more likely lines break as car breaks apart, and then spreads to tank 2ndarily. Doubt tub breaks up like Enzo's CF tub, but decel probably rips engine mounts and hence high pressure lines spraying fuel all over hot exhausts. Poof. RIP, prayers for families and children. Awful.
RIP.....very very sad....a good reminder that in NE the roads can get cold and slick real quick when the sun goes down.....
Usually inertia switch on pump, but it doesn't clear line to end, and I am reasonably sure the lines get torn/break. Oil lines too from dry sump, so a gallon or 2 ignites nicely as well when it hits 1500 degree cats. Lots of things break to dissipate energy away from passenger cell, sadly sequelae not always good. Pilot error >> mechanical issue far more often. Still, this is time to mourn, and take heed of our skills and use of equipment and roads. Very sad.
I forgot about the oil from a ruptured holding tank. There are plenty of hot surfaces around to ignite inflammable liquids. Still it is not completely clear how this kind of event is more likely in a Ferrari or any exotic for that matter, though I suppose the dry sump system may be a contributing factor as you suggest.
