You're probably right (I have no idea).

Are you serious? They actually allowed a Hurricane to fire its guns?
I would have thought they wouldn't even allow it to still HAVE its guns, let alone fire them.

That was a Fieseler Storch, widely used reconnaissance plane.

If this was QI, I'd currently be playing that annoying sound effect they play whenever someone falls into a trap... :)

    It's not an ME109.

I think you are right re the aircraft in the movie.
When I saw the aircraft in the pic, I thought it was a Storch and was surprised when I was wrong.

    Fabulous pics!

And again, are there any other retractable biplanes?

Found another one, Grummen F3F horrible looking thing but then they did produce the high wing Widgeon - now that was a real looker.
Only aircraft I have been upside down in on the ground or in my case the water.
    Wheels down on water landing!

So, no-one wants to have a guess at what that "ME109" actually is?

The exhausts are the giveaway (ie. They are what shows that it is NOT an ME109. Well, that and the intake directly below the prop).

Correct. It's a a HA-1112. Although I don't know if this particular example is powered by a Merlin. Given the chin intake, it probably is.

It just shows how rare REAL BF109s are, because I remember being mightily disappointed to learn that virtually ALL of the "BF109"s in one of my favourite movies of all time "The Battle of Britain" were actually these post-war Spanish versions.
And once you know that - and it's obvious when you watch it - it kind of loses a bit of the authenticity.
(Having said that, most of the Spitfires in the movie were also much later marks than were actually in the BoB, but that doesn't seem to grate quite as much).

Steve, you are quite right, a Hispano built 109. The entire nose is different from the original - the DB 601 is an inverted V12, the Merlin is upright - just like a FEOHOS. So, the exhausts are in a different location and the thrustline is higher in the Merlin version. I think there is only one or 2 DB engined 109s flying - one of which is a Spanish build 109, retrofitted with a DB. The most original DB engined 109 was crashed a few years ago in the UK, probably never to fly again - an irreplacible loss.

As an aside, there was a HA1112 flying at Goodwood this year - overheard a "knowedgeble expert" pronounce that the DB engines never sounded as good as a Merlin - while the Merlin powered 109 flew overhead. I couldn't pick the difference, mind you the 11 merlin flypast sounded pretty good...

You're a hard man. I said me109 (based on the canopy profile and the guns on top of the nose) and it turns out it's a Spanish built me109. I could see the exhausts were wrong btw.

I should get half a point at least. :)

You are quite right, and you certainly get half a point.
    Although I will insist it is not an ME109. It's a HA1112. :)

It's only in the last few years I've realised the difference myself, and I consider myself to be an "expert" on WW2 aircraft. I knew there was something that was not quite right about the 109s in the movie but couldn't put my finger on it.

Just for the hell of it, there are six aircraft in that pic.

What about the rest of them?
