F1 set for three-car teams

Interesting that just Ferrari and RB are being mentioned. MB has the capacity and funds to run three.

That'd be ok, with everyone having the option.

That's exactly my concern. It sounds like only Ferrari and Red Bull are going to do it, or even have the option of doing it, which disadvantages other front-running teams such as Mercedes and Williams - although I admit that Williams might struggle to afford to field a third car.

There's no need to disadvantage the two car teams if the point system is structured properly.
That being said Ferrari and RB may have to be offered some inducement to make the change.

I think that the three car scenario has been on the table for a while now and it's hammering out the details that's frozen next year's driver lineups.

 

Agreed. The three car scenario is the wild card that is holding up who goes where.

But to make it perfectly fair, each such team would have to say which 2 cars at the beginning of each race. In case of any of those 2 DNFs, the 3rd wouldn't count, even if it ends up in a points-scoring position. But it's sad the state of affairs F1 is in. It's almost a joke now, like a 2nd IndyCar league. But Indy cars look better, are faster, and sound better. Everything is artificial in F1 now, and poor teams just don't have a chance, no matter how they keep changing/adding stupid regulations. I think 3-car teams might be the least stupid thing F1 can do to keep a grid of 20 cars, but something much more drastic will have to change to continue being sucessful IMO. I, for one, won't spend my money going to another race again. Austin was boring as hell IMO. And the only other race that had potential (Ferrari Challenge), to at least hear some V8 engines , was all in yellow where I was seated (Club stands in the main grandstand). Just not worth it.

 

In this era of pay drivers maybe they can sell rides on a per race basis. A young talent without funds for a whole season would get the chance to show his stuff in a decent car.

I think Williams "Fortunes" will turn around next year by accepting desirable sponsorships.
You get paid next year for the work you did this year.
Whether they will still be competitive is another question.

 

Any provisions where there are non-point scoring cars on the grid defeat the purpose of there being additional cars on the grid. Furthermore it would confuse the spectators and fans; points should be easy to tabulate and you shouldn't have to draw out a diagram to figure out who's in the lead. Worst of all, it would create perverse incentives for teams to misuse their 3rd car and ruin the actual racing.

If they're going to allow 3 car teams, they need to do it right and let everyone run 3 cars if they want to. If you don't run a third car, tough ****, you don't get points from a car you don't run.

The most complex solutions are invariably the worst solutions.

 

There are also more teams moving in - its always like this, teams are in it for 2-3 years, can't hack, lapped every race, its not sustainible, they sell the team, some one new takes over, or like Haas, a new team comes in entirely.

 

This is an awesome aspect of it, that guy gets WDC points, and a chance to actually compete, even if not racing for a WCC. More competitive cars would be on the grid.

 

Fans in the stands will enjoy the race. Fans of the sport will know the standings.

 

I guess then it really just becomes a show with the sport being only a background convoluted aspect.

It would be to prevent Mercedes from dominating the Championship even more than they do right now - The last thing the FIA needs is for F1 to become even more: Formula Mercedes.
