LOLO, after that thing with Kimi (blowing), you know my english can't be trusted.....still, talking to you guys makes good practice!
I may have said it before, your command of written English knocks many other (native speakers) here into a cocked hat! I know the Viz was being 'funny' - at least we only very occasionally have visits from the dreaded 'grammar police' so prevalent (& obnoxious) in many other forums. Particularly when writing about non-native speakers. Cheers, Ian
Thanks, but i do believe we have some advantage over most countries, you see we never translate foreign movies or programs (except for small children), we have subtitles for everything, so this helps you to better learn diferent languages, especialy english, we also have a close relationship with Spain, especialy in the north, so spanish is also very easy for us (for many at least, although spanish people have terrible accent speaking anything else), and we learn french from a small age (or we did in my time), so there are many portuguese who speak fluently these 3 languages....
[hijack alert] I'm *certainly* no linguist - I still recall being thrown out of my Latin (!) class at school.... But, from the time I've spent around Europe, my impression is Spanish/Portuguese are pretty similar - get one you've got them both? Then French kind of falls into place? Your comments on TV are even more spot on up in Scandinavia though - Spent a lot of time in Sweden, among others, and basically everyone up there speaks really good English - and the common wisdom as to why was that all their TV was in English with Swedish/Norwegian/etc subtitles.... What kid is going to read subtitles when they can learn the language instead? Even the mighty Sesame Street was in English in Sweden!.... Kids learn easily if it's done early enough..... With hindsight, I should have had my boys watching Chinese TV when they were young. Cheers, Ian [/hijack]
Given the time frame you might have ended up with a cadre of Red Guards. With any language immersion works best. Sink or swim.
In Denmark we have kids TV that mixes Danish with either English or Chinese - so with time kids are picking it up slowly. My youngest son (4) use english words atleastonce a Day....
