Maserati stayed away from all Citroen tye connectors for all but the Khamsin Steering govenor, which makes life easy for repair. The issue comes when you do the fittings up tight and split the end of the connectors behind the flares. For the Khamsin brake shperes ( set at 46 Bar) the line is standard borden brake line with double flares. The other difference is to the presure regulator sphere set at 64 Bar. Graeme
Hi Mark, About ten people have emailed me to mention this car, including Brummen themselves, AM120172 was for a long time in France then the owner took it to Poland where he worked hoping to get the quite extensive rust sorted there cheaply but in the end he advertised it as is. I almost went to see it for a friend who declined due to the rust, then it was sold to Brummen. Not sure how good a job they did. The car used to be silver, the interior is the same color as before not sure if redone, it was nice already. It did have the smooth nose already, even 160 and 180 have smooth noses as well so not uncommon for such a mid production period car. The asking price however is downright silly and unjustified, just because one exceptional car reached that sum does not mean all K's are suddenly worth that. Graeme thanks for the show photos, light blue is a fabulous and all too rare color, suits it perfectly Best regards, Marc
These are by the (previous) seller in Poland. I have no idea how good a job Brummen did with the rust, since I have not seen it in person. Best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
A few more of 172. Odd that the passenger door should be particularly affected. Oh and the price range back then when it was all the way in south east Poland near the city or Reszov and the Ukrainian border was about €50K! Hi Marc, I like the smooth nose and early seats configuration. At least the photo's on the Galary site show a lot of new paint. The wrinkle paint job on the engine stops at the cam covers whereas the whole head should be wrinkle painted. The real question remains what metalwork was done prior to the kilos of paint. Looking at your reference pics it does not promiss a lot of good, would love to see the bottom side seams of the sills: K's never rust on isolated spots, normally it is their general state of being and that means a serious metal worker's job. Better check that car with a magnet in a hankerchief. I have seen jobs coming from Poland where they obviously held a doorhandle in the hand and plastered a car around it!?! On the other hand I also know a guy with 9 Ghibli's owned by him(!) who does a real serious job! BTW 2 original spiders... Saluti, Bart
My Khamsin, 178, also has the smooth nose, which I always found confusing but find very beautiful. Marc, when you say that 172 has the smooth nose already, what do you mean exactly ? I thought early noses were smooth, later ones slotted. Do you know how come 172, 178, 180 etc are smooth? thanks! Tom, Belgium
Hello Tom, As became clear during the years of research for my book, there is no logic. As Ermanno Cozza, keeper of the archives for many years, confirmed many times the cars were assembled with what was on the shelf on the day they were assembled. If you seek logic I suggest you focus on German or Japanese cars, not macchine Italiane. Read this thread in depth, this has been discussed many times before. Best regards, Marc
Finally the L/J cylinder head is back on 435's engine, it took for the supplier to send me no less than 4 head-gaskets to get me the proper one. I've installed the cams, but the intake jumped a tooth, my own fault, running out of patience, so I stopped. The loss of patience was due to the chain-link, stuffed all the holes with rags to prevent disaster, but I suppose the psychological factor was still there Some pics here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.160914667423487.1073741828.119309631583991&type=3 Best, Jack.
Hi Jack To help with assembly did you lock the cam at the alignment place with a piece of paper under a cam cap? Don't fret if you dropping something, I found you can retrieve things from the sump, take the supply line and fitting and internal fitting of the left had side of the sump, its a bit of mucking around but it gives good access. Cheers Graeme
Hi Graeme, Yes, cams were locked with paper, I just didn't take enough slack out of the chain. I'll try and rotate the intake cam one tooth back with the chain closed and full slack, and a lock on the exhaust cam. I.m aware of access to the sump, but retrieving anything that is not magnetic is a pain, and I believe the circlip falls into that category How is Khamsin-less life Graeme? Did you buy something else? Best, Jack.
Hi Jack Thanks for enquiring, I do suffer from sellers remourse, didnt think I would but thats life I owned the car for 23 years. Yes I did buy not one but two cars. I got a serious hankering for a Porsche and found an very nice 993 Carrera S and oddly a Tiptronic , Arena Red with chasmos interior excellent Mech history, exceedly competent road car. The other , by word and mouth a one owner time warp almost totally original, as it could be, 1971 Lotus ELan Sprint semi barn find. Took 6 months of recommisioning. It is my club run car and is huge fun. I had forgotten just how good they are, its almost as quick as the Porsche, its nice going for breakfast runs and I cost more to run than the car!! I am still working on my other long term recreation restoration project.. story for another day. I am still involved with the Maserati fraternity here is Aus, Tech help mainly for some good friends who have collections of cars Cheers Graeme
Hi Graeme, After such a long term of ownership you would have sellers remorse, but you have 2 wonderful toys to distract you. I have 2 friends who collect Loti (?) and I'll never forget my first ride in an open Elan, what an amazing car! Didn't have a chance to correct the cam-problem over the weekend, will do so tonight. Best, Jack.
Well I hope whoever bought it got a car that had its rust properly removed and I doubt they paid the asking price which, considering the reputation of that dealer and the unsatisfying response I got from them about the work, was very much unwarranted. Best regards, Marc
According to my information a Khamsin was for sale at autobazar.hyperinzerce.cz, a Czech website. Price 3150000 Czech Koruna, which I believe is 110-115k EURO. Hi Jack How did you get on with the cam and Link issue, You can just get a spanner on the other end of the cam, or I mad a special chain and block using a puller to grip the can between lobes which was moderately successful. Hanging around Ks and other Maserati's doesn't help, but I have in the back of my mind I will own another, The Elan is great grin a minute, they are just so alive and light and fun they remind me some what of the K ... odd I know they roll a lot but grip, they pull like a train in top gear and they make a fabulous noise, biggest difference on a Breakfast run I cost more to feed than the Elan!! Cheers Graeme
Saw these Khamsin photos on the site of Tony Erker (Classic Car). The first one may be in Greece, the second photo is in Italy, the Centennial. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello AMLC, Bedankt for that, The first one might well be AM120.242 in Austria, one owner car, I will meet the owner in Modena next week. The second car is for sure AM120US1082, Ben was at KHAMSIN QUARANTA with it. In other news AM120398 was sold in Stockholm this morning, after a very long ownership and with only 14000kms I was not involved. No idea who bought it. best regards, Marc PS and yes the car in your earlier post #5566 is AM120028 which was for a long time in Ravenna Italy.
Hi Marc, I just came bck from Scandinavia. #398 was bought by a friend of mine. He has also been looking at my T-Top K but, as you know, I am putting that baby on the February Bonhams auction in Paris. #398 seems to be in a nice condition throughout. Ciao, Bart
So two Khamsins left Stockholm the last week to move to Holland. A couple of days ago 082 went there as well. I'm amazed how quickly the prices have moved on these cars. I sold mine less than a year ago and now the prices seems to have doubled! I should have kept it! I have seen 398 many times. Last time today at the workshop and it is not a spectacular example even though the km is supposed to be low. I know the meter has been changed at some point and today it has it's clutch changed. If I compare the condition to "my" old car 218 it is like night and day.
This one is up for sale in Australia 1977 Maserati Khamsin 40 800 Genuine Miles From NEW in St Kilda, VIC | eBay Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice video. The rear lights have only one reverse light. RH light seems to have fog light instead of reverse light. Could that have been original from factory? Carsten
Sold early last year for 45AUD. It came under severe scrutiny for not being original, fabric interior. I have viewed this car it is in original condition and the buyer should get books included. Reading the add it doesnt say he is a dealer and he is, also if discussions with the owner are any thing to go by the reserve may be around 100. Graeme
