The mystery of the first race
Let's go ahead and get right to the Ferrari driver: in his
memoirs writes that his first race was the Parma-Poggio di
Berceto October 5, 1919 with a CMN, and his two biographers
Valerio Moretti and Julius Schmidt will take over the news.
But there is a surprise in the auction held in Modena at the end of
1989, one year after the death it was on sale a photograph
where a young Enzo Ferrari is driving a Caesar
(car built in Turin) and in his own hand on the back are the
coordinates of the uphill race Pavullo -Sestola held July 19
1917 with the annotation of the time employed 36 '12 "for a
    path of 26.475 km
Apparently it was an adventure just before the service
militare.E then? Why Ferrari has not mentioned, nor the two
authors have even suspected? Unfortunately, the picture was
sold but are photocopies of the image and the back
    published in the auction catalog.

The Pavullo/Sestola wasn't a real race, it was an event named raid.
A raid ( frequent event in those years) was more properly meant as a gathering of the first pioneers of motoring, engaged on some particularly challenging trails with their cars and the goal consisted just to reach the finish.

The Parma-Poggio di Berceto was instead a real uphill race, as it was the first car race organized in Italy after the world war.

So it's correct to say that Enzo Ferrari's first racing car has been the CMN and his first race, the Parma-Poggio di Berceto of 1919.

    Ciao
