Good thinks come to those who wait. I was lucky to land my first car in only 2 months but I did not get what I originally set out for. I wanted what you want and ended up with a black F1 GTS and I could not be happier and have no regrets. You will find the right car.

Oh thank you for making my life easier 😝 I'm secretly looking for a 94-96 but I'm willing to go over that for a good deal on a 97-99. In all reality I feel that the 95s are way easier to be stolen - I think the fact that there is an immobilizer in 97-99 ecu would make me think about her less whenever I go somewhere (gf or friends) and I have to park in a carport (or even on the street). I think you are sorely mis informed. Do you really think alarm technologies from the mid 90s will keep your car from being stolen? Do you know the other benefits from the 95 cars? Do you know how inconvenient the 96+ cars can be to start, live with, and problen solve?
Oh no. Here we go again... Anyone who can't get their head around the immobiliser from a '96-'99 probably shouldn't be driving a car at all. It's not hard: Get in the car, put the key in the ignition. If the light in the centre console is flashing, push the button. If it's not, don't. Start the car. The end. I've never been stranded by it. Ever. The ONLY thing the '95 has over the others is that it is (allegedly) easier to modify. Just buy the best car that you can find in the spec you want, and don't waste your time on anything else.
Yes, I am aware, just to know some of these things are common across all the cars that were in production back then and moved from obd I to obd ii. So you have better airflow in the 95 and also less things to worry about (less check engine lights). On the other hand you have immobilizer in the ecu and obd ii with all the benefit of better monitoring various parameters. In most cars you can plug an obd ii reader and review Various parameters in your cell phone - has anyone tried that here? I wouldn't worry too much about theft unless you are parking your car in the ghetto. And things like the glue from the fender shield is something that just isn't an issue. Also, if you find a 15-20 year old car that doesn't have a paint chip or two it's most likely been touched up. These are old cars and even the "pristine" one will have some history.
I own a 98 and a 95. 98 first. As I sumized, evolution makes a car better. The fit and finish of my 98 is better than the 95. That does not make a 95 bad, just a fact of evolution. One example is the change to a revited rear trim piece covering the top of the center taillight mesh.
Appreciate the info on the condition of the cars you go look at, it's good information for the board. I'm happy with my '95 but the later cars have some benefits as well. I think year would be low on my list of criteria, tbh.

You're right, it's screwed on but I fail to see how that's an improvement.... The main improvement I'm aware of on the later cars is the reinforced front spring mounts. Not sure when they made the change.
Pete, it's not the rivets that make it better. The post 95 trim is a nice smooth piece, the 95's are some rubber (non rigid) trim that IMO looks sloppy. I'm guessing that's why it was changed. I bet your trim is the later version.
I recall there was something to do with the suspension which was originally only on the Challenge cars but was subsequently fitted to all cars after late '97 or so?
That was the aforementioned spring perch reinforcement that earlier challenge cars got as part of the kit
