    Hey all,

first message here: there are so many forums on this board that I'm not too sure if I need to introduce myself in a specific sub-forum or not.

I'm from Europe, Belgium (Brussels) and I plan to buy a 348. If I buy that car, I'll of course post pictures here and register it in the 348 registry.

The car I'm looking at has had its plastic sent to "sticky no more" a few years ago and I was wondering how "good" that refurbishing was after several years. Obviously when the plastic comes back they look gorgeous, but what about after, say, five years ?

What if the car stays parked under the sun (not that we have many of that in Belgium, which is more of a country with a weather similar to the weather in the U.K.) :)

If the refurbished ones do not age and stay as gorgeous as they look, why is that?

Welcome - But you should hold out for a 355. ;>)
There are many ways of getting rid of the stickies.
Sticky No More is almost certainly the best. (My stickies were removed, but not by SNM. The surfaces are OK, but less than perfect.)
The new surface is paint, I think; SNM's site will probably tell you, and it should last forever.
The original surface was a "soft touch" plastic that just got too soft with age.

Because as said above, the process is not the same. The refinished parts are a satin paint finish that is not rubberized. So, effectively, you can't compare the refinish to the OEM.

However, most of us prefer to forgo the original rubberized finish in lieu of finish that will last longer than original.

my vents have not been destickied and they are super sticky at the moment.
your fingers turn black if you touch them.

but I had some aceton at hand and just wiped a couple of times over one of the vents and must say that that part turned out nicely and not sticky!
haven't further investigated due to lack of time but it looks promising.

Yea the look is bad but the black tar substance on your fingers and cloths is worse!

For many of the trim items you can't get away with simply removing the decomposing rubberised coating and leaving it at that, because in many cases the base colour below is not black, its white. So once the rubber is stripped you often have no choice but to recoat with something.

I use grey plastic primer followed by black satin paint, looks superb when done.

For stripping I've tried numerous products but like many here the only one I've found that works really effectively is oven cleaner.

Thanks a lot to everyone: makes sense!

Frank: indeed, Lier is very close from Brussels: thanks for your invitation! I'll send you a PM so we an get in touch by email and/or cellphone (maybe this forum requires at least x messages in the forum(s) before I can send a PM, so I may not be able to PM you immediately).

Talk to you all very soon,
