I recently replaced the original wheel center caps with the "new style" I didn't notice until the wheel were back on the car and I was packing up the old ones that the old ones have a rubber o-ring on them. Does this o-ring need to be transferred to the new style caps?
Really? I did no such thing....3 years and all seems well. I recently scratched up a mag on a sidewalk and needed to have it refinished. popped out the center cap and then popped it back in, no ring, no issues whatsoever.
Maybe Daniel will chime in but they are not shown in his photo. I've bought 2 sets of these and both did not include O-rings - I needed to use my old ones.
Ricambi has a youtube video showing how to replace the old caps with new ones. No ring is seen nor mentionned in the video. http://youtu.be/sndtTKmGHLc
They exist - they are there for a reason. Use them or not, It's your call but I like my cars to contain all the parts as designed. I'm sure they prevent water from getting behind the wheel.
I don't think I've ever seen parts 15 installed either. http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=1393
All 355's(street versions excluding CH) came with 3 way protection for the magnesium wheels....rubber gasket on wheel mounting pad...o-ringed outer center cap...and inner o-ringed cap at back side of wheel. Look at how your magnesium wheel is machined at those areas for each individual piece. The newer style center cap that everyone is buying is for the aluminum wheels..NOT the magnesium wheels
Said before i could , this info is 100% correct They are there for corrosion protection " serenity now "
If you really want to be meticulous about the installation of the center caps, install them with the "proper" orientation. The bottom leg of the horse is supposed to be pointing towards the valve stem, and the horse's head away from the valve stem.
That's my view. The diagram for the 5.2 cars is different. It does not have the inset diagram with what appears to be a different set up. Thanks for this info. I was wondering what all those parts were for. Never seen this on any other car before. Me too!
I had to use the old o-rings when I replaced the Wheel caps. My dealer told me that the o-rings/seals had to be orderd if i couldn't use the old ones. Bertil
One other thing, the new superseded cap doesn't fit quite as well as the originals on 355 wheels (please don't ask how I know).
Are the original ones still available? And how do the replacement caps differ? Any one have photographs of proper placement on the wheel? Thanks.
