I respectfully disagree. I think McLaren would have loved to keep Kevin for a number of reasons including the fact that he would cost them less. They invested in him and now effectively killed his career. Also not to mention the popularity contest that McLaren is losing out on. How many British drivers came out to defend Button?

On another note, how many people think Ron can be forced out (again) if his experiment with Drama queen Alonso fails (again)?

Anyone know if alonso has number 1 status in his contract? I imagine that, given they were desperate to sign him, that they would have agreed to make him number 1.

This could skew the results in favour of alonso and allow him to beat button by a more considerable margin

Sorry, you misunderstood my confusing sentence. I was asking the poster to define 'crush', and suggesting 2:1 as a ratio needed to be exceeded at least to achieve the 'crush' as he (or she) put it.

I myself do not think Alonso will outpoint Button anything like that if at all. Let's see.

Really hope the Honda unit delivers the relative goods.

where do you come off with garbage mouth like that?

Read how respected BBC F1 writer describes Rob Smedley's opinion of Fernando:

Before joining Williams this year as head of performance, Smedley spent 10 years at Ferrari, gaining three years of first-hand experience of Michael Schumacher and spending his final four years as Felipe Massa's race engineer, with Alonso on the other side of the garage.
"Fernando is the very best driver of his generation," Smedley says. "I would go so far as to say if not the best ever. He is that good. He brings that much performance to the team. I am a massive fan of his.
"To have Fernando as your team-mate, as most people have found out - Kimi Raikkonen has certainly found out this year - is not easy. You are talking about very good drivers who sit beside him on the other side of the garage. I don't think there is anyone in this paddock who could live with him."

    Magnussen's 22, he has time.

I recall his dad was supremely dominant in F3, but didn't shine in F1; perhaps Stewart GP was the cause, that did kill his F1 career, though not as a racing driver per se. (I'm not implying Kevin will follow the same path)

Guys, if we can't resolve this here they're just going to have to settle the matter on the track.

Since Ron's hinting it was Button asking a ridiculous amount of money hence the delayed announcement, I'm curious to see what Buttons package actually was.

This season was about £12m apparently.

    Apparently half that next season.

Why shouldn't his advisor's hold out if that was the case.

So many stories- which are true.. Apparently Ojjeh (25% owner of Mclaren) and Al Khalifa (50%), wanted button, Dennis (25%) wanted Mag.

Mclaren need to get it going on in the sponsorship side. E.g. look at UK football. Manchester United are getting £750m over 10 years from Adidas plus £35m a year from Chevrolet.

Why not hold out for more if possible? Button singlehandedly (pretty much) secured Macca's 5th place in the constructor, winning them millions of dollars/pounds in prize money.

I like in the article how Alonso says his idol was Senna and Button says Prost. Subliminal messages to each other or intentional? Hmmmm.......
