i've seen a couple at local dealerships, but none on the roads. I've been debating with my friends, would you rather have a gt3 or a 911 turbo?

Since both are sports-cars, I'll take the sportier one, the GT3. Significantly lighter, none of that AWD crap, and smooth predictable normally aspirated horsepower. Not that turbo-chargers are bad, I love 'em, but considering this thing is almost pumping out as much power as the 996TT anyway, I'll take it.

As a side question, how do you tell if a GT3 is authentic or not? I was stopped behind one in here in Orange County a week or so ago and it looked like a GT3, had the GT3 label on the back and all...but I didnt think they were legal in California for some reason? Could it have been a body kit? Or am I just mistaken and they are really all over the place now :)

GT3s are around. I've seen some poseur cars who were using the old GT3 aerokit on the 911 (which is a dead giveaway, since that car wasn't here).

But if you see a newer lookin gone (the tail will be a good indicator), then chances are it's legit.

    Mark,

At first guess, I would say it's fake. The tail is the original GT3 tail, which is also an 8k factory option (including the bumper - I know, typical porsche bullsh!t ripoff scam artists) - however the original 996 GT3 was never brought into the US. So either it's a federalized car, or here under special guise (show and tell?), or more likely than not, it's a dubious fake. However, the wheels look to be correct...

I profess no knowledge about the topic...

i think it's fake, the gt3 has bigger exhaust tips. a good way to tell if it's authentic is to look at the seats. the gt3 has racing seats and i believe 5 pt belts.

That's a fake - I think. You can tell from the front of the car. That is the earlier 996 front end for a start. Looks like a 99-01 996 with a GT3 kit.

The wing is also not the new GT3 wing on closer inspection.

Appears to be fake to me.

That's a fake... That bodykit and wing combo was the "aero package"... It also has the standard Carrera wheels. Man I hate it when people implement ricer tactics on nice cars...

The standard GT3's are legal in California. There is another version that I think is the GT3 R, that they are not bringing into the US and is not legal. There is a new GT3 at my office in Los Angeles. It's very nice.

The photos show a 1st generation (99-01) 996 coupe with the optional Aerokit (rear wing, side skirts, new front bumper cover). This was a relatively popular option. The aerokit pieces makes the standard Carrera resemble a GT3 (the original 996 GT3, not the new 2004 one).

Nothing wrong with this, of course. Just the lame-ass maneuver of sticking the "GT3" plate on the rear deck.

    vty,

No - there was a GT3 before the current one that had the same wing as the car in question.

I'm not sure if this is a GT3, photos were taken last month at TWS. Maranelloman & Mitch would know. Sweet car though.
