I started when I was 20 and discovered that shower shaving immediately stopped razor burn irritation and ingrown hairs on my neck.

I just use soap and whichever Gillette Mach or Schick blades were on sale. No mirror - I cover my left and in soap lather and run my left fingers as a guide in front of the blade and to make sure I don't miss anything.

Believe it or not, without the reflection/depth perception problems of a mirror, I can shave twice as fast and rarely if ever cut myself. When I use a mirror, or in odd times a shower isn't possible, I cut my lips and chin more frequently.

I tried shaving in the shower without using any kind of lather, and found that after a week or two of doing so, I would get red blotchy areas on my face. Now I just use regular soap. I wait until the end to give my hairs a chance to liven up.

How often do you guys change your blade? I literally go a few months. A fresh blade is nice the 1st time I use it, but afterward, I cannot say I see much difference between a 1 week old blade versus a 2 month old blade.

Soap is not good for shaving your face. Proper shaving cream/gel is. Soap makes your skin rougher, and it doesn't protects from potential cuts.

As for the blades, it depends. Mine goes on for a few months. About 4-5 months sometimes. The key is rinsing it thoroughly after your shave, and storing it upright position, in a cool, dry area.

This is my choice for the last few years..

The Schick Quattro titanium coated shaving razor blades.

Definitely go with shaving gel. Preferably a gel from your hairdresser. Shaving in the shower keeps me from cutting my face and from getting razor burn. No mirror, though. Maybe I'll try one.

I'm a shave in the shower kinda guy, been that way for as long as I can remember and I can't do it without the help of my trusty mirror. I use disposables from Dollar Shave Club but use Jack Black skin care products. I also brush my teeth in the shower. :)

I have been using the Mach 3's....pretty happy with them. I shave in the shower about 50% of the time based on how late I am.

I'm surprised at how long you (and others) go without changing out the blades....a week is a long time for me. I use a pre-oil and shaving cream to cut down on nicks.

Hi Tom, it's been good, I've been a member for a few years now. I recieve four, four-blade cartridges per month for $6, the initial shipment included a compatible handle...plus each shipment arrives with a hilarious little pocket-sized bathroom reading material. :)

Wow, that seems like a righteous deal. I will run it past the house finance committee (AKA the wife) and see how that compares to buying a gazillion of them @ Costco. Thanks, Derek…T

I read that essential cleaning and upright position of the blades helps to last long. I generally shave 3 times a week, my head and my face.

The Mach 3s seem slightly smoother compared to the Schicks..

I used to always shave in the shower with either a Gillette or Schick, but I recently made the switch to a Merkur Safety Razor and I LOVE it. However, to be on the safe side, I am using the mirror above the sink these days.

I highly recommend this system if you want a closer shave and to save some money.

Same here, my wife got me a Merkur Futur Double Edged Safety Razor for Christmas and it's great! Much easier to cut yourself than with a cartridge razor, but I get much less irritation and an infinitely closer shave. It just takes a bit more time, but it's definitely worth it.

The razor itself is quite expensive to buy and get set up, but once you've got it then the replacement blades are less money for over twice as many blades when compared to the cartridges I used to get. It'll pay for itself in the long run, but even if it didn't I'd still shave this way. The traditional razor is terrific.

I like to shave in the shower with a mirror suctioned onto the wall. :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Training myself (Merkur Safety with Feather Blades) now to step up to in-home straight razor. Long process and some days it's better than others but I'm getting the hang of it and bleeding less. Definitely a softer and more deliberate set of motions than is needed by the Fusion backup/modern disposable. Art of Shaving Pre-shave oil in the shower and then their cup-and-brush soap immediately following. Sandalwood or Lemon. Both are fragrant without being offensive.

Has anyone used Harry's. Seems the same as Dollar Shave.(?)

Your question reminded me of this for some reason:

“I didn't wash today. I wasn't dirty. If I'm not dirty, I don't wash. Some weeks I don't have to shower at all. I just groom my three basic areas: teeth, hair, and elohssa. And to save time, I use the same brush.” - George Carlin from Brain Droppings

I use Feather High-Stainless Platinum Double Edges in the Merkur Heavy Classic.

Gots very coarse Italian hair and I can get a good 3 with each side before the nicking starts again on my neck. Feathers (for me) have worked the best on the thick hair, but they fall off fast.

Bought a 10X10 display pack from AMZ for $30. They are on the higher end, but still nowhere near any of the big names. If Astra or Wilkinsons work for you then you are even luckier.

My routine just doesn't lend to in-shower. Sometimes wish it, but I kind of like the developing blade skills.

I am using Personna blades which I can get about two shaves out of (100 pack for $14 on amazon). I recently ordered Feather Blades which are more expensive, but are sharper. I should note that I have very think facial hair, so I am fairly picky.

Muk Ya Jong, I have used Harry's and was not at all impressed. The blade tugs on my face and I can only get a few days out of them. The razor handle (the metal one) is the only thing that I was mildly satisfied with. I hear dollar shave club might be a little better.

I was changing them every 5-6 days, but the guy at the shaving store suggested I change them every 3-4 days and then perhaps think about switching to a shadowy blade when I run out. He suggested Wilkinson, then to try Feather after that.

    All the best,
    Andrew.
