In the past I've used my ancient Milwaukee rotary polisher with 3 step 3m products, sometimes skipping the abrasive stuff and going right to the medium compound and gray foam pad and finishing with blue compound and blue pad. Even on a black car this has resulted with perfect results.

I see most of the polishers listed for sale on Esoteric's site are orbital. Are most detailers using orbital over rotary now for some reason or is it just a matter of personal preference?

I use Orbital. There are so many pad selections and polishes these days. You can get the abrasiveness that can have the same effectiveness as a rotary with a denim pad. There is a lot less risk of burning through in a moment of distraction.

Biggest reason for a orbital is that the random action does not set up uniform marks in the paint to create holograms like a rotary does.
