My water pump is coming out for a rebuild on a leaky seal. I want to swap in a new thermostat as long as it is all apart. Now, I really like Ricambi and this is not his fault, but the 355 thermostat is priced at $284.09. That seems darn high compared to what I am used to buying for other cars. Ferrari Parts : 165473 THERMOSTAT : Ricambi America What makes this so unique & expensive? Is there a cross reference to something a little more standard? What operating temp is it anyway? 190 f?
Just test it in a pan of water on the stovetop. No need to replace it if it still works. There's a fairly high failure rate for new thermostats.
Is there a reason why you think your thermostat needs replacement? It can be done at any time, from the top.
Good point on the failure rate. I forget about that. Replacing it later is an option...but it is sooo simple when it is sitting on a bench. I THINK it is fine. But car seems to run a bit cool when compared to the Gothspeed data collection thread. I'll test it just the same...Is it a 190 f unit?
GT Car Parts in AZ has them for $40. I bought one based on recommendations here but did not install yet.
Watson Ferrparts sells them after market for about $65.00 I've used them with no problems. My car was also running to cool. When i changed it my gas mileage sure went up.Not good for the motor to run to cool.Runs rich.
Watson if you want it now I'll send you mine. I don't need it and don't know if and when if install it. I think my car is running fine..
Mine does run on the cool side and seeing as I am in that deep already.... A generous offer. Thank you. But I think I'll be fine. My car leaves tomorrow for the engine out. It will have 2 - 3 weeks of "idle" time as the entire team at Motion Products drives trailers full of cars down to Cavillino at the end of the month. That's when I am rebuilding all the ancillary parts like the WP. I think I have time to wait on the thermostat.
So thermostat arrives from GT car parts. $52.90 all in. However..... Here is what is stamped on the rim: BEHR THERMOT-tronik ITALIA 4M 82 I am thinking the 82 is the temp, in Celsius = 180 degrees...too cold correct? What does the 4M stand for I wonder? The little weep hole looks to be a post manufacture addition as well. Picture: Image Unavailable, Please Login
sorry for the stupid question. but how/why would a not properly functioning thermostat make the engine run cooler ?
You get what you pay for....there is no comparison between the 2 other than they are both thermostats. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Because it would either open too early, or close too late = an engine that runs too cool. The coolant wouldn't stay in the engine long enough to reach or maintain optimum operating temperature, which is consistently above 176ºF. That affects the fuel mapping the engine uses.
Thinking you are correct....jiggle pin & all But geez $284 for a thermostat? Maybe Ferr parts is next....or Daniel. With Daniel you know it is 100% correct. But $284 for thermostat? Geezus It's not Daniels fault....but man. And it aint the money. It's the principal of the whole thing!
I'm kinda dense on this one. I have heard there is a high failure rate out of the box for F355 thermostats. The failure being the open and close at the wrong temperature. Is the failure rate isolated to non oem thermostats? Will the Ferrari OEM work correctly? This is really the biggest frustration I have left with my F355 to sort it out. It runs too cold like is seems many do.
Bastard! You quoted it for posterity so for all time all the world will see my typo! Damn No....it was $100.
Like 2NA says. Mine are going in a pot of water with what i now to be a very accurate thermometer. I may take it through several cycles to make sure it works.
