Finishing up a major on my 94 348. Attempting to reconnect the shift cables underneath and found they do not have enough slack to fit the retaining ring on the sheaths into the locking clamp. I am coming up short by approx 1/8 ". Before I go tugging on the cables is there a secret to making this connection ? I have the shifter and transmission in neutral as originally disconnected.

    Thanks,

    Brewman

If they fit before, they should now.

Sometimes a bit of gentle persuasion is required.

I dont quite understand your problem but if its the cable wont attach to the lever try "changing gear" by moving the stick so the mechanism is nearer to the cable.

    Apologies if misunderstood.

Took a few pics of when I lubed my cables if any help...

Yes, moving the gear lever should bring the pivot closer to the cable end. I think the forward positions will do that, with the bottom of the lever moving backwards towards the gearbox and cables.

Many thanks to John K 348, 2NA, and Jeff348 for their help in solving my problem. Moved the shifter forward and got enough slack to fit the sheath insert rings into the top half of the retainer. After bolting the bottom half of the retainer to the top returned the shifter to neutral and using a bit of gentle persuasion connected the shift cables. Piece of cake.

    Thanks
