In the very first picture of this thread, what's the little black box mounted in the ledge below the window? My car came with that too and it's a huge mystery at the moment what that could be.

Speaker box. Custom made. Not oem. Speaker holes just have the covering over them so you don't see the speaker.

Mine had what looks to be the exact some box except just one on the passenger's side of the glovebox. I wonder if it was for a phone setup or something? Same bracket underneath too. You think we both have something totally custom that looks exactly the same?

Mine also has what looks like the same sub box but doesn't say Mcintosh. The box also has two amps mounted to the wall in front of it. Not sure which brand.

Strangest thing, under the dash was a cigarette lighter plug, plugged into a cigarette lighter adapter. It must power/have powered something? I think the best bet is to rip everything out and start over, maybe using some of the same components depending on the quality.

Yes. I took all that junk out even though it was good back in the 90s.

Mine came with the same two small aftermarket speaker boxes on the rear shelf sandwiching the glove box. Obviously aftermarket but look exactly like these ones. I removed them. I hate any visible changes to the interior for the purpose of a stereo.

Can we chat for a minute? My car has the exact same sub enclosure, passenger side amp and rear black speaker box as you had. My amp even is missing the branding plate like yours. I'm curious what you know about the components in your car. Is it really Mcintosh? I'm afraid it's cheap crap that I may throw away but don't want to do that if it's decent.

Mine was all real stuff. Just old and outdated. Someone can use it. Give to a teenager rather than throw it out. I gave mine to my daughter to put it in her car. Otherwise I would have sold it on eBay. I don't throw much away with eBay and craigslist being out there.

So you don't know who installed it? My sub is the EXACT same as yours, right down to the two grills. That's odd. Why did you replace it with the Kicker sub? Is a sub mounted in the front effective?

I have no clue who installed it. Kicker sub was better than what was in there, but not great. It would be better in the cabin or just leave it out and save weight. Since the 355 is not that fast by today's standard I was not really worried about it.

For what it is worth, below is what is what I ended up with after pulling out the complete fubar installation that was in my car.

The amps are mounted on small channels.

The sub is a low profile unit: Amazon.com : PIONEER TSSWX2502 10-Inch Shallow-Mount Pre-Loaded Enclosure Sub Woofer : Car Electronics

The sound quality is above average. Not great, but I rarely play the thing anyway. It does have Bluetooth for connecting to my iPhone and the hands free speaker which I like.

I do have room to put things in the trunk.

Where does your sub sit and what are the two small things mounted on the side?

Sub is sitting on the floor of the trunk against the firewall. You can see the top of it in the picture. It is only about 6" tall.

Those are adjustable crossovers on the side. I salvaged those from the previous install and placed them in the trunk instead rattling around inside the doors :)

And the driver of the sub is aimed at the ground. Is that effective?

I should almost take the cloth off my box and see what's inside.

Subwoofers are omni directional. Doesn't really matter what direction they are pointed. It would have more bang if it was installed in the cabin....but where? You could stand it up and aim the speaker at the firewall I suppose.

The level is adjustable via an external volume knob just for the subwoofer. I installed it with some two sided tape inside the ashtray. Close the lid and you would never know it was there. :) Cranked up I can give the kids in their tuner cars a run for their money.

It is just sitting on the floor. I never even bothered to tag it down. Seems fine just the way it is and the less holes I have to mess with the better I feel about it.

I would send some more pics but my car is at the hospital having a major done :(

    EDIT: Found one more picture

Great. thanks for your quick response. How much power are you feeding the sub? Whats the quality of bass like? Can you really hear the bass when the trunk is closed and the car is moving? Do you have a modified exhaust like a tubi muffler to battle with?

800 watts....yes I can hear it fine. This is hooked to an Alpine head with Polk Audio speakers & tweeters. It is above average and nothing to be ashamed about. But it is no McIntosh or Carver high end system like I have in the house.

My car has Fabspeed headers, high flow cats and a Tubi exhaust....and occasionally a Tubi tube-only exhaust.

The law of diminishing returns on a high end stereo creeps in pretty fast with that combination. ;)

Fantastic! you have given me some great ideas on what to do with my car. Thank you!

PS. i watched a movie recently called osage county, it had a 355 F1 with a booming sub. I think the movie guys just dubbed the sound in, but your car system sounds like its actually possible to have booming bass in a f355 spider!

And could you comment whether it's worth putting two amps in the trunk to add a sub vs. getting some nice door component speakers and powering it off the head unit.

Well, one amp is for the interior speakers and the other amp is for the sub.

I have never had very good luck with internal head unit amplifiers so I seem to just rush towards an external amp.

Perhaps today's stereo's are better, but I didn't even try my Alpine that way.

Focal PS165FX 2 way component set. I have them in my 348 with a 500w Alpine amp. Couldn't be happier with them.

You have to be careful which door speakers you choose , the mounting depth is very shallow and few speakers will fit , iirc its 3.5 inches
