Waxing 355 wheels?

Bradan recently stripped and refinished my stock 355 wheels which also included a clear coat. So far I've been just wiping them off as they get dirty but eventually planned to "wax" them with something. Besides basic protection and shine, I also hope is this will make the surface a little slicker so brake dust/dirt won't stick as easily. What do you guys use/suggest? I notice on several types of polish they go out of their way to say "safe for clear coats". Do some types of polishes harm clear coats? Would plain old paste wax be a good choice here?

I think you want wax, not polish. Polish actually removes material and is used to get light scratches and marks out. Wax will add a layer of protection. I like AMMO Skin along with their Creme Paste. I'm not a painter, but I've been told to let paint cure for a month before waxing. I assume that varies with the type of material and how it was applied.

 

I use Prima Banana Gloss liquid carnuba wax on the body and wheels. Looks amazing...

 

Good to know. I have used regular wax and it does help but the stock brake pads are so dusty I'm thinking of replacing them anyway.

 

I never knew to wax wheels. So add this to a new thing learned today.

I've used various car waxes on all of my clear coated wheels and they've all helped just like they would on the car paint itself. The only type I wouldn't use again are pure carnuba waxes because with the heat from the brakes because they do not seem to last as long as the polymer types. Just be very careful not to get wax on the tires because it is hard to remove.

 

I haven't done this on the F car yet but on other cars;

I start by using Sonax Full Effect wheel cleaner and washing the wheels thoroughly.

If they aren't super dirty than just regular car wash and water.

Blow dry.

I then follow up with IronX liquid and/or paste to further remove any iron contamination. I also use TarX to target any tar, asphalt, etc.

Once that's all done, I wash again with regular car wash to make sure all chemicals are removed.

Follow up with wax. Recently bought Poor Boys Wheel Sealant. Haven't tried it yet though.

Any wax will do I suspect but you need to consider how long it will last in terms of the heat the wheels see, as well as what you will use to wash in the future and if it will strip the wax.

I don't know if any of this stuff I mentioned is compatible with the paint you have, just some things to read up on.

 

I have had good results with OptiSeal. Within the usage period of 2-3 months, I do not even clean/wipe my wheels, only spray them with the power washer. All dirt, brake dust, etc is gone instantly. I know it is hard to believe, but true.

When the power washer alone does not get the wheels perfectly clean, I know it has been 2-3 months, and time for the next application.

Please check out this great product that I discovered by accident!!! My good friend Kyle who owns a fantastic high end auto detail center sold me a ( quick wax - fingerprint and bird poop LOL and handprint remover) last summer I was heading to an early morning cars and coffee event with my 1999 355 GTS ( where by the way there is never any coffee, Haha) and my wheels looked dirty so lazy me had an idea ????
