Wearing a Smiths today. An English watch from early 1970s. Rolex says Sir Edmund Hillary was wearing a Rolex Explorer when he reached the top of Everest. Smiths says it was a Smiths. Sir Edmund is the only one who really knows. Image Unavailable, Please Login
He was given the Rolex explorer as a gift a week after he climbed Everest, my guess is he was wearing the smiths watch
Several conflicting stories and accounts for sure. It has been written that the Serpa was given a Rolex bubbleback from a friend of his to wear (just a simple Oyster on a strap) while Hillary wore a Smiths. Others say Rolex gave everyone in the expedition (including Hillary) a watch to wear (a prototype that would eventually be branded as the Explorer) and that Hillary kept that one in his pocket...but wore the Smiths. I too believe it was a Smiths that was his 'trusted' and personal watch he chose to wear. Rolex however, tried to find a way to make sure they were able to promote their watch as a being there for the first summit. They just don't like discussing the fact that they were NOT the only watch on the top of the mountain that day! Total speculation of course. I have owned both an Explorer and a Smiths...so I don't play favorites!
I have the same watch. Bought it a few years ago to replace one. I left a Cartier in a hotel room, maybe stolen or forgot it, either way when phoned the front desk said no watch. So I bought the Rolex. The Cartier was a birthday present, originally was a Rolex, but I didn't like them. Small wrists, bulky watches don't look good on me. Last month decided to see if Cartier still made my watch model, they didn't. Found one on EBay. Its not the original but its identical. Very happy. Might sell the Rolex.
