I'm wanting to fit a push start button to my 360, want to delete starting the car with the key, as in put key in turn ignition on and hit start button using a normally open relay and wiring it so if i hit the start button accidently whilst im driving the starter will not engage. I had the local sparky draw me a wire diagram but my mechanic seems to think the diagram is wrong looking for some input if anyone here has fitted a start button or has the knowhow on correct wiring procedure. Any input welcome. Picture 1 supplied by sparky. Picture 2 if anyone can fill in the blanks with correct wire sequence. Cheers Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
1 is wrong - terminals 85-86 both go to earth - one of them should have power. You'll need a latching circuit that makes the start button inactive (or becomes a stop button) once pushed - or else just don't push it! (Use a missile switch cover). Also, the way he's wired up the relay will turn off your ign when you try to start it.
Cheers Patrick, Sounds like you know what is goin on could you join the line for me on the second drawing. My tec said I need power to switch the relay over so when car is running I can't engage the starter. Thanks for your help.
Yes you want to avoid being able to attempt to start a running engine. This is normally mechanically incorporated into the ignition barrel. If you don't want to have to turn the key back for a restart attempt, and do want protection from an accidental restart, then it is best to monitor for ignition spark, if the ignition is firing then the engine is obviously running. You want a latch type of signalling on it, so that during the starting process the starter is not interrupted when ignition starts - but once you have let go of the button and engine running you will be unable to attempt a restart (until ignition is confirmed stopped). There are relays that can monitor for ignition activity but those won't do what you are looking for out of the box. Perhaps google a bit, there may well be manufacturers that offer a push button electric start relay to do exactly what your are looking for. Also, bear in mind that if your car is a 3-pedal, you want to ensure starting is only possible with the brake on and/or clutch in, though that may be already wired that way.
I've had a fiddle around, but very difficult to make the logic circuit using relays. I have a fuel cut-off switch in my race car that takes a wire off the coil and kills the pump when the spark stops - you'd have to make sure that a modern system is compatible with such a device. If you want the full stop-start button, there's probably a kit in Jaycar. If you want to wire it up as is, don't cut the ign wire, just take a junction off it (easiest way is to pop the spade out of the connector block and solder a wire onto it) and use that to power the switch side of the relay (85), and connect the start button to 86 and earth. I assume the starter wire is only a switching current, so you can bridge 85 to 30 to power the starter, and just use a SPST relay (no 87a) and pull the starter connector off the ign switch and plug into 87. No cutting wires. Use a missile switch with a cover so you can't accidentally push it.
The relay I plan to use. I definitely want to have it wired so if I hit the start button in motion the starter wont engage and only want it to start the engine not to stop it I'll use the key to stop the engine. My car is stick shift but can't remember if brake or clutch has to be on to start only driven it twice and that was 2-3 months ago before I stripped it down for some TLC Cheers for the input guys. Still use 87, ignore 87a. There is probably a way to isolate the start button with relays - I'll have another fiddle when I'm in the mood.
