    Correct.

Obviously I've never flown an ATR72, but an engine failure in this type of aircraft for a properly trained pilot and a properly maintained aircraft is as close to a non-event as you can get.

    Something else has happened here.

A slightly unrelated topic (which may be worthy of its own thread) is the fact that when you are talking about TURBINE aircraft, single - engine aircraft have a far better safety record than twins.

But the public is unlikely to understand and accept this for many years yet....

Steve - can you please explain why it would be the case that a single engine TURBINE aircraft has a far better safety record than a twin engine aircraft ?

Oh, the comment threads on AVHerald are definitely hit and miss, some people who finally would know and others who just think they do. The main posts are generally pretty reliable though, anything reported by onlookers, passengers etc is noted as such and official sources (airline, government reporting/investigative agencies etc) are used as much as possible.

Firstly, most people assume more engines = safer. That may have been so in the past but it is not the case with modern turbine engines. However this is a very difficult thing to overcome.

Happy to go into more detail later or on a different thread, but I emphasise "turbine" because this may not count for single engine piston aircraft.

But, the fatal accident rate for turbine twins is significantly higher than for turbine singles, and the main reason is because (believe it or not) in the extremely unlikely event of an engine failure you are more likely to survive if that failure was in a single.

When you lose the engine in a single, there is only one option: a forced landing.
And when that happens in a turbine single it is very likely you can either return to the airport you departed from, or glide safely to another suitable landing site.
Eg. In our PC-12s throughout virtually the entire climb if we have an engine failure we can simply turn around and glide back to where we came from. Or if we lose the engine in the cruise the gliding range is extraordinary and always means there is somewhere safe within easy gliding range.

When you lose an engine in a twin you need very good training, and very good piloting skills to continue on to a safe landing. If you have both of those you certainly have more options than your single engined friend (ie. continuing on to your destination), but if you don't the end result is much more likely to be a smoking hole in the ground.

Finally, remember, in a twin you are twice as likely to have that failure in the first place...

Unfortunately I could only get a dodgy quick iPhone pic as I taxiied past, but saw the new Qantas 737 with the retro '70s paint job a couple of days ago.

Looks superb. They really should paint the whole fleet like that. :)

We arrived on a Delta 737 and departed on an American one, so kindasorta that size I guess. Was only there for one full day, but I made sure to pick a day with a 747 and A340 scheduled :)

Had a lengthy stop at LAX on the way home (40 hours from hotel door in Miami to home front door in Perth, 26 of that actually flying) so we made a brief trip to the In'n'Out burger next door for some more aircraft nerdery. I was definitely outclassed there though - I've never seen lenses quite so big, nor people seemingly camped out in the middle of a city just to take photos of planes!

It's great isn't it? I think even just the tail art would be good across the whole fleet - the winged kangaroo is so much better than the current one!

Saw the ANZ Smaug/Hobbit livery today too - I judge the livery to be miles better than the movies from which it draws :)

Thanks for that, my all time favourite plane, still get upset when I remember I lost the 3+ cap I got from one of the ground crew for a carton of XXXX.

I particularly like the photo with the power rings

If you look at the picture above the C5A? picture you will see the partitioned off area which was the original secret build area for the aircraft. In the foreground (in the build) and rear (complete) of the picture you can see the framework for the containers in which they transported the first planes to Groom Lake by road. Amazing stuff when you consider that they invented all this stuff from drawing board to flying go to whoa in 20 months!!
