Yes, I think that will be in our future. Although I doubt we ever reach the expertise of Dave or the rest of the group. We also quite like our local mechanics - Andy and Jon in AZ.

Congratulations Robb and Welcome to the Challenge Club! I considered that car before I bought mine. My car was sold by an enthusiast member here and that was the big decision maker for me. I think these cars look great in black but they really didn't have good pictures on the Lake Forest web page. I can't wait to compare notes with you on our cars. I have been trying to assemble all the information I can on the series. I will go through my pictures to see if there is anything with your car in it.

Forgive me if I missed it, but will you be re painting it to the original blue?

actual 355 challenge "race" footage is rare on youtube..
the two links I posted here are about the only ones I could find..

there are lots of 355 challenge videos in general, but not of actual racing from the time.

im in Montreal, long ago I went to see F1 6-7years in a row..
I almost preffered to see the challenge events more then the F1..
got to see the 355's, 360's and 430's. havent been since.

    Eric,

It's going to be our long term project. We'll take a year to get to know the car and then take our time getting it back to '98 spec making sure each piece is good to go.

But ideally, yes, we would return it to Pozzi Blue. We want to enjoy the car as it ran back then and have it make us better drivers of our other cars. So it's going to be a keeper for a long time. We are Tifosi - not dealers... :)

    That's great.

Did you get a chance to sit in it? How was getting in and out? There's no way I could contort myself through that small little opening. :)

Yes, getting in is not too bad and is similar to getting in our other road cars without messing up the seat bolster.

The seats were in great shape and snug but not too tight. I'll still be losing some extra weight to make it better on my health and lighter on the car...

Once you are in there, because of the full cage, it doesn't feel like a road car anymore. It feels a bit tight on the space.

Getting out is the most difficult. A right elbow up through the window and your left hand on the cage gets you to a sitting position on the side bar. then a bit of origami to get your legs free.

Not terrible. But the cars with the full cage and side bars welded in are not for grocery getting. :)

We will have to replace some padding at the helmet bar so that our necks are not on a cant.

    Cool stuff moving forward.

    Robb

Wow. I saw that car when I was there and my thinking at the time was they're going to have a hell of a time selling that car. These cars seem all full of problems just being babied for 1,000 miles a year I can't imagine what it's like to maintain one for track use. I hope it goes well and you don't have to sink too much money into it. It's a lucky car to have found you.

Be mindful of the danger of driving a car with cage on the street in case of an accident. Or, are you planning to remove part of the cage? My guess would be that you will quickly end up trailoring it to events, and hence really don't need it to be road legal. Particular since you have a few other 355s to drive on the street. :)

Yes I agree. We will be trailering to tracks.

We will likely leave the car's cage as-is and get the road registration as a side-note only. We have other F355's for that. No reason to spoil a perfectly good race car - when it can stay great at that.

I have lots more to share but also wanted to thank a few people that have been very informative and helpful and down right inspirational on the search.

We'll start with Barry (308 GTB) - Thank you for all the phone calls and texts.
Bullfighter for the inspiration in restoring his raced 356 speedster - Thank you Jon.
Ryan (Sherpa) for all the great pieces - history, knowledge, inspiration, you name it.
and I will thank my brother and family who like to stay very low-key. But are there cheering us on.

Thank to them and to you all very much for your kind wishes.

More cool facts are being gathered as we speak. I'll keep adding info as it makes sense.

Car's driver in the '98 and '99 series for all North American races was Tim Robertson - you will know him by his own successes and also as Pat Robertson (the televangelist's) son. The car was on the Foreign Cars Italia team of four cars running with Matt Drendel, Leo Hendrey and Marvin Jones. Sponsors on the car were Speed Vision, Commscope, Discovery Channel, Asprey, Shell, Pirelli, Perugina.

Looking to be an exciting ownership.

I'm glad you found one. As I mentioned in my previous post here, I hope you enjoy it as intended. I'm also glad that you'll put it back as raced in-period.

    Congrats Robb!

I didn't know you could legalize these for road use considering it's supposed to be obd2 by that year.
