So can we deduce the same ratio of ABS to non-ABS cars for the rest of the world?

Thanks, the Vin# 99295 date of delivery February 1995. I've not seen any higher vin number on a 512tr.

    Delivery date or manufacture date..
Manufacture date among other places is that aluminum plate with stamped on numerals at the drivers door jamb near/ in front of seat recline lever

Also in your pic....it appears as if the 458 is larger in all proportions to the TR...and we all though the tr was big??????

The TR is a wide car at the back and especially in the 90s this car was extremely wide but modern cars are much bigger and chunky even tho the 458 was a slim and sexy design it's still not as slim line as the ferraris from 80/90s.

Thanks for this info. It seems that "October 1993" which I have listed on my website as when ABS was presented is incorrect. However, my website also mentions "near s/n 96400", so should still be correct. ;)

Looking at other serialnumbers, your car can indeed be produced in December 1992. Or otherwise early 1993, using some tricks to get it registered in 1992 (perhaps related to tax issues) ;)

At US versions, the 9th digit of the VIN represents the "Model Year". This is not the case at (for example) Euro or Japanese versions. In those cases, there is NO "Model Year" in the VIN.

So, in your case, the "P" in the VIN is not referring to Model Year 1993, but it's simply part of the three digits "JAP", related to "Japan".

I can only do a VERY rough guess:
    * ABS was introduced near s/n 96400 (as stated above)
    * Looking at the total production of the 512 TR and looking at all serialnumbers known to me, this would mean that approximately 800 512 TRs were fitted with ABS. Again, this is a VERY VERY rough guess ...

#99295 was already produced in 1994, probably around April. But it's certainly possible that it wasn't registered until early 1995.

The last known 512 TR has #99743.

In that serialnumber range are 2761 Ferraris, but not only 512 TR. Also other types.

I have a question , which no doubt someone on this forum will have the answer to...... When Ferrari introduced ABS to its V8 models , as early as 1988/89 ..... why did it take them almost 5 Years, to put this feature on their flagship V12 model?

My only thinking on that question is that the big production cars got ABS first and the smaller production cars mattered less. If anyone has that answer- I'd like to know as well.

I'm Super Glad that there's finally an answer to the 'How many' question on ABS cars. 800 makes more sense than the misinterpreted 34 number.

A lot of this discussion has brought to light issues on serial numbers not relating to actual production on cars-

Is there a way to tell production dates other than serial numbers??

    Mr. Sennadrive-

You need to read through this whole thread before you can make that claim.

I have a '94 and I wish that were true- In fact I started this thread to find out the real deal on that- but it doesn't seem like what you're claiming is true

If you have evidence, please share...

I am trying to find out if i have one of the last 512tr produced and if there is a certain value if it did.

I haven't seen any Vin# higher than mine 99629. Date of Purchase: 09.1994. and am not sure if the information posted here is correct.

you can see the last serial no. for the TR is 99743 and the first serial no. for the M is 99664. to my knowledge these serial no. are not type specific. they are for all ferrari produced that year. and i know for sure that the 512 was last produced before any new F512M came to production line. so how can a tr have higher number than an M?

    512 TR
    Production started: 1991.
    Production ended: 1994.
    Total production: 2,280, 50 RHD (38 ABS).
    First serial number: 89100.
    Last serial number: 99743.

    F512 M
    Production started: 1994.
    Production ended: 1994.
    Total production: 500, 41 RHD.
    First serial number: 99664(?) / 99744, 1/75.
    Last serial number: 99993(?) / 99774, 75/75.

    F355 and 355 F1 GTS
    Production started: 1994.
    Production ended: 1999.
    Total production: 2,577, 434 RHD (74 F1)
    .First serial number: 98894(?).
    Last serial number: 115891(?).

I think serial numbers are assigned to a build but don't necessarily move down the production line in that order.

It's been demonstrated here that serial numbers do not necessarily demonstrate order of production

I have a '94 Swiss market car with some 512M product on it such as engine block and interior items - I think it's more a matter of what's handy on the production line and what cars are being produced for what market because my serial number isn't the latest.

99629 is indeed a very late 512 TR, but I know of at least two "later" cars (99641 and 99743). Both numbers are "confirmed".

    Don't forget "pre-production" cars.

There is at least one more "older" F512M, s/n 99375. Also note that the last F512M has a lot higher s/n, 105516.

seems to me that the abs addition was somewhat random.
how easy would it be to add abs retroactively?

    Ha ... Ross ...

You need to find all parts from a scrap 512TR or M .... they will cost a fortune.

Only then you may be able to have it installed ... NO way imo ...

And what is the benefit ?

I drove the 512TR 6 years to the MAXX and did not find trouble NOT having ABS ... :)
