Don't mess with the book owners ;).

    I will never understand re-bodying a car.

How can anybody drive an authentic-style fake ?

In Bentley, it is common practice and acceptable to re-body a car. Most of the 1920's era Bentley's are re-bodied. The important part is the vin tag. They often put several old Bentley's together to make one good car and its still coveted by collectors.

Appeal upheld over rare vintage Bentley - Telegraph

Re-bodied cars are often referred to as Bentley specials.

Yes common practice amongst the Italian coach builders too. But don't tell that to the ferrari owners.

Period or vintage rebodies are very well accepted. It is the modern rebodied vintage chassis that are not, particularly when it is not a custom rebody but a copy of another existing model.

    Very different.

The sultan of brunai younger brother had 2 mythos built on production testarossa's. Pinninfarina had sold theirs ogininal to a collector in Japan. these were being commissioned afterwards. I suppose they should just should of used a fiero chassis?

A new P5 exist in Japan also. Built off an old P4 chassis. Has anyone ever seen the alfa 33 pinin and P5 together which was the same body for 40 years? Just recently I have.

    Exactly.

A re-body at the time the car was new, is a different story.

Others are trying to fool the parking lot crowd into believing it is a 250GTO or a whatever.

yep, that's why we have non-period rebodies in another forum, but period rebodies allowed within regular vintage forum.

Different to some. Others feel that ownership trumps all, and that customizing your coachbuilt car falls into the best traditions of owning a rare luxury model.

Thank you all for visiting here from the Vintage section to essentially validate my point, LOL ;) (not the part about the book owners, which was tongue in cheek, but the part where Ferrari fans are mental about this topic, on both extremes) Apologies for hijacking the thread.

It's odd that this vintage re-body debate thread is here in the Lamborghini section.

When you have people that should know better (I'm looking at you Adam Carolla) still making Miura SV's out of earlier Miuras, it stands to reason.

Yes but he made up for all of that with a very prescient (uber early) purchase of an Islero ...

Where did that one go after him?

I have a very high level of respect for ownership rights and appreciate coachbuilt cars. What I am not crazy about is building a copy and attempting to pass it off as real at the expense of another perfectly good car.

    Or, another scenario,

    Gatto

Steve Moal is a good friend and is responsible for the Gatto. It is an extraordinary piece of work but has so little Ferrari content I failed to see the need to take the motor from what was a quite good GTE to get a motor for it. It would, to me anyway, be even more interesting if it had say a Falconer V12.
Oh well, I wasn't the one paying him for it.
