My guess is its cf hybrid wheel, maybe the outer edge is metal and there is metal reinfircement in the spokes, at least that way failures are not catastrophic. But yeah prices should not be too extreme.

Hopefully this is a new revolution in wheels, and there will be options available to fit to other cars.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ford are making their own CF wheels. There have been some really interesting projects going on at FoMoCo during the last 4-5 years. CF engine components, CF wheels, and some others.

Exciting times to be a car guy!

Gm ran the z28 at Nurbering for weeks, I dont buy the wet story, its the best time they got.

Now perhaps we should question the validity of a ring time, its certainly one measure, but its alsoa flaed measure. How relevant is a ring time to a 2-4 mile track where most cars are likely to be run.

More importantly what does a mustang lap time look like ona 3 mile lap on say lap 10 compared to a camro.

There are too many cars out there that can snap off one or two fast aps before wilting. For someone who spends days at the track doing multiple 30-40 minute sessions far more relevant is consistent lap ties. Do the brakes hold up, does the suspension, if the car is too heavy tires dont last.

If you want to go lapping with your z28 or 350 mustang, or evtte or Gt3, the question is one of consistent and sustainable laptimes, fastest single lap is bluff, it may have some relevance but in relality a heavy car may do a few fast laps before brakes and tires are cooked, so its single lap time is almost irrelevant to a day at the track.

I nwat to know what the mustang weighs, because that will tell me how long tires will last, and I wnat to know what laptimes look like on lap 10 midway througha day of 30 min sessions. I woudl liek to kow thta about any supposed street/trrack car. Sucha measure woudl also shift the focus and bring us cars really able to track.

Still either way, the mustang has to be agood few hundred pounds lighter than the z28 and probably has the same hp. If Ford dialed in the suspension and its got strong brakes odds are its quicker than the camro. Does not mean its more durable over a day, or more fun to drive. But so far based on the limted info we have the mustang 350R looks to be very interesting.

Love reading about cars on ring. Fav is comparison ring tests.
I track 2 very different cars and both fun. Gtr can be fastest car in instructor group for few laps then i have to slow down to let it cool. Lotus is slow but can keep up its best pace full session. Common sense says new z06, z28 or nismo, etc will need cool down laps. Porsche gt3 and 350r maybe not. Besides not too many drivers can or should go flat out for full session. Its not racing

According to the track test at Car and Driver, Probst ran nearly non stop sessions in the Z06 without any issues. The Z/28 has also done extended lapping sessions with no issues. Sure, tires can go away when abused-but they do that on nearly any ontrack race car as well. NASCAR, F1, Sportscars, etc all need to be cognoscent of tire wear and heat.
Even the Hellcat is supposed to have survived an incredibly brutal development in order to ensure engine survival in any condition and hardly any power loss.
Yeah, the Lotus is neat and fun to drive. Never the less, I watched a completely stock base Corvette walk away from it at willow like it was a pedal car. Lapped it every session. Owner of the Corvette had flushed the factory brake fluid and replaced with Motul and had ditched the runflats. Didn't have any problem running hard twenty minute sessions-neither did the Elise, just much slower.

I did not think Pobst drove for C&D. He did drive for Motor Trend and at Road Atlanta:

"Considering the capability of the optional tires, brakes, and aerodynamics, we were surprised to hear that when Pobst pulled back into the pits after his fourth lap, it wasn't because he wanted to stop. The car had flashed an oil-temperature warning on the back straight."

Yes, you are correct. I subscribe to all the major mags, I'll have to check which one it was when I get back to the studio. Thought it was interesting that they had experienced none of the the heat soak issues described by probst for Motor Trend.

Tire survival given the same compounds and same driver at same track is a function of vehicle weight and velocity. Over 30 mins tires on a heavier car will go away first, and will certainly last a far shorter peod of time, while cornering speeds will be slower due to mass.

I have read issues of z28s running hot. Nor is anybody who is inot serious lapping going to buy stock z28 tires at 2k per prop where they last one day.

The best way in a Lotus eilse to pass a vette on track is to sit behind him on the bends till he gets ego and overdrives his car. In a race situation you could probably take them throught he twisties, but in laping you pass on straights. Yes down any straight a lotus gets creamed by a vette, though the bends equal drivers maybe a well driven Gt3 is faster tha a lotus because it can put the power down sooner and harder commign out of bends.

In my experience once a vette waves you by on an under 2 miles track in a lap or two in a lotus you have put quite a distance on them. Go to a shorter track say 1.5 miles or less and the vette is not even in the hunt.

Now go to a bigger track like watkins glenn and you wave the vette by on the straights and their speed is so high on long straights even reasoabaly driven they lap you> An extra 20-30mph in a vette down a long a straight makes up more time than time made up in cormers on a lotus.

The most aggravating thing is getting stuck behind the same vette through the bends lap after lap, beinf stuck in their traffic so to speak, and then have him blast away along the straghts only to be on his ass for the next corner and the ones thereafter, as I said once a vette waves you by in such situations its a davange lotus.

As Stirling Moss famously said "straights are the boring bits between the corners"

Yea once you master carrying some speed through corners its fun and faster to have a car that can add on the power too, but very often power is a crutch that holds back learning.

A smaller lighter shorter car has a particular advantage through twisty bends that a bigger heavier longer car does not.

To me the relative measure is how well a car holds up over 30 mins of being on track, lest say after 2-3, 30 min track sessions, what is its average laptime then. How many sessions do tires and brakes last. Can swap back to street tires and drive that car home and just change the oil after 2-3 days on track, and lets say can high temp brake fluid last 3-6 months, how long do pads last. I might also be inetrested in a car with space where a back seat used to be, so I can put my track wheels and tires there for the drive too the track, tools Jack etc in the trunk.

Maybe just maybe the mustang fits the bill, if it can hold up to a few days of consistant lapping, then it would make a great big track car. Any modern fast car is way faster than can sanely go on street, so there the relative differences are more about feel, and sound.

One thing for sure, we are seiing some great and potentialy great cars start to coem fromt he domestics. If they are durable on track, as some seem to be, then its a home run. If not then we add them to the list of one lap wonders, greta for bragging, but of limiuted utility if "you wanna go fast" because these days really going fast is onle really saftly or consistently practised on track. So if ford Gm Porche sell cars as track capable, lets see if they really are, for more than one or two laps, and lest see what those consistent lapties look like. Methinks the pecking order woudl be inetresting.

Thought that I would bump the thread. Order bank is supposed to open next quarter. Has anyone heard anything different? I know that my dealer will get a couple of allocations and I am promised a car. Just bought an F350 quad cab to seal the deal.

Road & Track is currently saying 'At least 520HP' and that the GT350 will start around $50K and the GT350R will start around $70K.

Looks like they are reporting third party info from a Mustang forum though. They also claim that there is a rumor that a few will be sold as 2015's.

Shelby GT350 will make at least 520 hp

Wow 8250RM Redline in a Mustang. I thought 7K+ was a lot in my Boss.

    110 0r 120hp per litre not impossible with a flat plane crank v8, I heard 650.

Whats the hp per litre on a 458 motor?

Don't get me wrong... I think that would be awesome. Isn't this the first attempt at a Flat Plane V8 by Ford? I understand it is apples and oranges but the 5.0 in my 2013 Laguna Seca only makes 88 HP per liter.

I'm not an engine expert, does the flat plane inherently make more power over what is in the current GT? I love the fact that it can rev much higher like a Ferrari. :)

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it in person. And I hope you are right that it is closer to 650.

I'm not looking forward to the dealer markup games.

Others who know far more can chime in but flat plane generally allows better scavenging (but exhaust system is more complicated) and smaller counterweights on the crank that allows the engine to rev faster than a cross plane.

Your Laguna Seca engine could've been tuned to make more than 88 hp/liter if Ford had so chosen. It's always a trade off between reliability, cost, emissions, drivability etc.

Was at the Ny show chatting with the ford reps. they say the Gt350R 3500lbs and now an offocial nurbering lap time of 7.32 on stock tires.

the Cf wheels save a 35 lbs and are a big contributor to performance. If you bought them as a standalone option they would be 15k. Wheels are full cf no steel lip.
