The Boss is heading to Europe. One of the flights she's considering to Munich is described as a United flight that's operated by Lufthansa. That phrasing showed up elsewhere (a Delta flight operated by Lufthansa.)

Can someone explain this to me? (Whose plane, whose staff, etc?)

United and Lufthansa are Star Alliance partners. Means they share routes over competing. Believe it will be a Lufthansa plane and crew, even though you bought a United ticket. Its considered the same as being on United.

Lufthansa. It's a Lufthansa plane and staff. You get the United mileage credit but no upgrades. You can use their lounge if you have a United ticket on Lufthansa.

I fly them all the time. Lufthansa is 100 times better than United. Lounge better too.

You can get some weird routing with star alliance members. Few months ago I was in Vegas. My Air Canada flight to Vancouver had some Germans on it. The Germans route was Vegas to Vancouver on Air Canada, Vancouver to Germany on Lufthansa.

Codeshare. Ticket was booked on United but United doesn't fly that preticular segment. It's quite common.

It's pretty easy to be great when your govt. subsidized/state owned, which pretty much all but US carriers are.

I flew last Thursday from Munich to LAX, Tickets purchased from Lufthansa but the segment to LAX was a United aircraft, 777, United paper boarding pass, service was decent, accommodations were brutal, business class, DO NOT sit in the middle rows, as you are shoulder to shoulder with your neighbor, with out a divider. I had the pleasure of having my 18" away neighbor sneeze his whole way to Los Angeles. Ugh.

I haven't flown United since the merger with Continental, but I usually had good service in the past. In fact the last time I had a steak in coach was on United, back in 1998!

This sort of code sharing occurs on thousands of flights everyday

i flew 1st class on united from lax to munich. fantastic everything. flew home on luftansa, business class. what a joke. i paid united for 1st class but was bumped down to business by luftansa because united wasnt aware that flight had a 1st class section. my seats in 1st class remained empty the entire flight. united even called luftansa directly to inform them those were my seats but germans can be stubborn. bad experience.
